MILEY CYRUS TO MAKE A SPLASH IN TEEN PLAYBOY
Aug 12 2008
Chicago, IL – Playboy Enterprises Inc. has announced plans to target the incredibly lucrative tween market with the introduction of ‘Teen Playboy’. Targeted at the 14-17 year old market, the new venture is being designed to modernize the nearly sixty-year old publication.
“Playboy is very proud to announce this new venture. In co-operation with our partners, we aim to open our brand to the ever growing youth market,” said the company in a statement. “We believe this new venture will revitalize the Playboy brand and be an enormous success, not only for us and our shareholders, but also for readers.”
The company has partnered with Laufer Media, Inc., publishers of ‘Tiger Beat’, in the new venture.
“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for our company,” Laufer media said in a statement “It provides our company with a whole new platform to speak to our young and ever expanding audience. It also allows us to partner with one of the most recognizable and respected publications in the world. We that the teen pornography market is a totally untapped segment of the publishing world; we hope our readers will be as excited as we are.”
The two companies plan to release the first issue in late October. Tween superstar Miley Cyrus will be the magazine’s first centerfold and will also grace the cover of the first issue. Her recent foray into personal photography is part of what inspired the magazine in the first place.
“We saw the enormous reaction that Miley’s pictures garnered and that showed us there was an enormous potential in this market,” a spokesperson for Playboy said. “We saw in that reaction not only a great opportunity for our company, but also a chance to expand our philosophy to a younger generation.”
The aforementioned pictures were allegedly stolen from the phone of the ‘Hanna Montana’ star and spread like wildfire across the web. Along with controversial pictures taken with her father, Cyrus has become the face of tween pornography in recent months.
“We are excited to associate ourselves with such a great company,” said representatives for the singer. “We feel this allows Miley to connect to her fans in a whole new way, as well as allow her to move into a more grown up role.” None of the parties involved were willing to comment on how much Cyrus was paid for the shoot, but rumours put it into the high seven figures.
Already parent advocacy groups have their knives out for the new publication, but the two companies tried to head off any criticism before it began.
“We realize this magazine might cause some controversy in some circles but we will not bow to special interest groups,” said a Playboy spokesperson. “We have been embroiled in controversy before and we know how to deal with it. To be frank, this is the way celebrity journalism has been going for years and we see this as merely a logical extension of that practice. We will remain undaunted and will allow our readers to decide.”
Playboy shares increased ten per cent on the announcement.
