PETA TO OPEN SERIES OF SLAUGHTERHOUSES
October 2 2009
Norfolk, VA – There are few advocacy groups in the world with the kind of public profile or global mindshare as PETA. With rambunctious public campaigns and advocacy approaching zealotry the organization has become one of the most loved
and most hated groups in the world with very few people falling outside those extremes. Whatever the public may think of the organization successful undercover operations have yielded tremendous results, forcing many companies to change practices and saving the lives of thousands of animals.
Of course there are animals that advance the organization and others that don’t. A recent report indicates that the organization has been killing a number of animals under its care with up to 95 per cent being terminated at PETA facilities last year. The organization has not commented on the report but the recent breaking of ground on a new slaughterhouse outside their Norfolk headquarters indicates that they are ramping up efforts to rid themselves of certain animals. Because of their secrecy exact numbers and reasons for the terminations will likely not be made public but it’s believed that the Norfolk facility is just one of many being opened over the next year.
“The simple truth is PETA receives a lot of animals into its care and we are not equipped to deal with this load. This is not an animal shelter but people continually drop off animals at the door expecting us to take care of them. We considered opening a series of shelters but the cost would have been prohibitive so termination seemed a lot more reasonable solution,” said an insider for the organization. “We’re looking to up up at least four more outside the Norfolk facility which will allow all of our satellite offices to rid themselves of the unwanted animals and get back to business of fighting for animal rights. It’s really an exciting time for the organization and we hope it will put us in a good position going forward.”
The Norfolk facility will apparently be equipped with furnaces to eliminate carcasses in a environmentally responsible manner.
“Despite the controversies there really has been no better advocates for animals in recent years than PETA. Greenpeace has done a great job but they work on a much larger scale and their vision encompasses a much larger vision. PETA has been the sole advocate exclusively dedicated to animals and this slaughterhouse seems to be an extension of that,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “By freeing themselves of the burden of taking care of all those animals they will be able to dedicate their time and energy to advocacy. Taking care of sick and needy animals can be a burden to any business and simply getting rid of them makes a whole lot more sense than using their limited budget to allowing them to live long and fulfilling lives.”
The majority of the animals being sent to the PETA furnaces will be cats and dogs though some exotic animals will be also see the ovens. The organization is reportedly considering a plan to add a leather producer to their coming Naples, Florida facility.
“If they play this right they could actually bring more dollars into the company. Ultimately the important thing is that they remain economically viable so that they can continue to advocate for animals that don’t fall into their care. Whether it be commercial producers or bad owners, stopping that kind of behaviour is the best thing for all animals,” continued Green. “Tough as it might be the reality is these animals will be sacrificing their lives for the greater good. When you are talking about the survival of the species you can’t get worried over a little spilled milk.”
Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, lifted the first shovelful of dirt in the groundbreaking.
