ICE CUBE STILL HARDCORE IN BATTLE WITH FORMER BANDMATES
August 15 2011
Los Angeles, CA – When they first broke on the scene in 1988 N.W.A. was an earthquake. They shattered pop culture by exposing a dark underbelly that few in America were aware of, and didn’t it with such aggression and raw anger it alienated most of those very same people. The group changed music and possibly America forever. They didn’t break down walls, they detonated them up.
The fire and potency of the group wasn’t just played out in the public, however, but also behind the scenes. The same type of hard-headedness and anger that fuelled the music of the group also fuelled the personal relationships between the various members, eventually resulting in a meltdown that saw principal songwriter Ice Cube leave the group to pursue other interests. While the group sustained, much of the anger had been lost in the process.
Cube himself went on to be incredibly successful, starting a solo recording career and an acting career which saw him exploring the same dark avenues he walked in his music, at least for a while. Eventually Cube got old and started to cool down, eschewing hardcore attitudes for family friendly tales. Quite the change for the N with the biggest A. However, if one thought that family movies and videogames made Cube soft, one would be wrong, at least when it comes to his old band mates with whom he is apparently as hardcore as ever.
“No more questions,” Cube responded bluntly when asked whether he regretted leaving the group. It was the most he had spoken on the topic since a reunion back in 1995.
“Cube doesn’t play that game. It was a hard time you know and it isn’t something that he likes to deal with. It’s in the past you know, nothing he needs to address anymore. He got paid, the story’s over and that’s it,” said an insider. “A few years ago Dre called him. They talked for literally a minute before Cube threw his iPhone across the room. That thing just exploded. He jumped in his Bentley and was gone for hours after that.”
The principle dispute in the group was believed to revolve around the relationship with Eazy-E who died in 1995.
“I remember that night he barely touched his dinner. It really hit him hard. We even had brazed pheasant which is his favourite food. He just went for a shower, a really
hot one, and went to bed early. That was the last N.W.A. incident I remember,” said the insider. “People just don’t bring it up. The last thing you want to do is make Cube angry.”
It’s not clear if Cube caused any problems after being asked about the breakup. He had been walking though LAX on his way home.
“There are some things you just don’t say. It’s about respect you know. Cube don’t like and so we don’t talk about it. He don’t even like anything about 1989. He doesn’t watch any movies from that year, no music, nothing. It’s totally tainted,” continued the insider. “Cube just doesn’t do things like that. That whole year is dead to him and it ain’t never coming back so stop asking. It just makes our life more difficult.”
Cube will next appear in the movie version of ‘21 Jump Street’ which aired in 1989.
