MATT LAUER CONSPIRES TO GET HIMSELF FIRED FROM TODAY
November 22 2012
New York, NY – For years and years ‘Today’ was the top morning talk show in the country and a huge moneymaker for NBC, a network which has been struggling for a long time. Recently, following the departure of popular co-host Ann Curry, that has changed and ‘Today’ has lost ground to rival ‘Good Morning America’.
That decline has not mad the network particularly happy, and given the machinations of the lead host, Matt Lauer, that possibly helped bring about this result, it appears that Lauer may be next on the chopping block, thrown to the side in favour of, well, someone else.
Lauer has not yet been fired, not officially, but according to many sources his exit from the show he headlines is imminent and unavoidable. Aside from the declining ratings, Lauer has also angered many people who work on the show in part because he has conspired to get them fired, something which often doesn’t sit well with folks. Now, though, the full plan has come into view with the likely termination of Lauer and the final play in his long-running plan to get himself fired from the show.
“This problem is not going to go away until Matt Lauer does. He's great, but fairly or unfairly, his brand is damaged,” said an insider of the current state of affairs at the show.
Lauer has survived many co-hosts, some of whom left voluntarily, some not so much possibly at the hands of the highly paid host.
Lauer is paid more than $20 million a year, a good deal of which will likely still have to be paid out when he is fired, something that he may have been planning for all along.
“Clearly the ratings on the show have declined and there could be a whole lot of reasons for that but Lauer and perception of him are certainly not helping. I doubt that many people care too much about the interpersonal conflicts on the show and if they do, then they love the show and will keep watching, but clearly something has happened and Lauer is not helping to turn it around,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “As the principle host of the show the axe does need to fall on his neck. Clearly the problem wasn’t Ann Curry and the only one left is Lauer. I mean Al Roker is still around but no one is going to reach for the remote one way or the other because of Al Roker.”
Willie Geist, who hosts the later version of the show, is considered the front-runner to replace Lauer. He’s also much cheaper.
“Clearly things have not gone the way Lauer planned, or they have gone exactly as he planned. It could well be that he simply didn’t want to do the show anymore but was locked into a contract. Perhaps he saw destroying the show as his only option for to leave. Perhaps this was all part of some vast and complex conspiracy that is only now coming into full light,” continued Temple. “Or perhaps he was just wrong and screwed up the show by being a jerk and now he’s getting his comeuppance. That’s probably more likely than it being some massive conspiracy. He’s a smart guy but something like that would take a lot more than just smarts and good looks and a receding hairline.”
No one is apparently plotting against Roker, who may have been part of the conspiracy to oust Lauer, perhaps without him even knowing.
