CYRUS: ‘NOTHING’ WEIRD ABOUT RELATIONSHIP WITH DAD
February 21 2009
New York, NY – “The media has said some stuff about my dad and me being too close and too cuddly for a father and a daughter,” wrote16-year-old actress and singer Miley Cyrus in her new memoir ‘Miles to Go’. “For me and my dad it's not weird at all. We don't let other people tell us what expressions we're supposed to have on our faces when we take a picture together!”
For most, that claim will be seen as an indirect comment on last year’s ‘Vanity Fair’ shoot which showed the young starlet in mildly suggestive pose with her father, fellow singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus. It was only one of many controversies the ‘Hannah Montana’ star stirred in 2008, which also included stolen cell phone photos, and candid comments about her relationship with ex-boyfriend Nick Jonas. The comment is just one of many naive and marginally comprehensible passages in the book, which was acquired early by the Associated Press, which is bound to stir even more attention.
“The pictures were...strange. I guess that’s the right word for it. I don’t think that anyone looked at picture of a fifteen year-old girl lounging with her father and thought that it was normal or acceptable in any way. Well, anyone outside the incest and pedophile populace anyway,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Of course they are from the south and incest is a little more acceptable there than it is in the rest of the country or rest of the world. There’s little doubt that the ‘Vanity Fair’ issue was an orchestrated affair designed to sell magazines and bolster her mindshare, but justifying it in this way just reeks of the same thing. Its promotion of promotion, but what the handlers don’t seem to realize is that they are qualifying incest, and that really isn’t a good idea, despite the fact that they do make a cut couple.”
Equally surprising as the justification of the photo shoot is the memoir itself, with Cyrus shocking people with her ability to form complete sentences as well as the need for a 16 year-old to have a memoir in the first place.
“The book was written with Hilary Liftin, who is an actual published author and no doubt actually wrote the book. The content though, that’s another thing all together. As I understand it contains a number of lists and a lot of pictures, as one would expect,” continued Temple. “I’m very surprised there are no pop ups though, that could have added a whole new dimension to the incest storyline. There’s no doubt though that the book will sell piles, which really doesn’t speak well for the collective intelligence of young American girls. Hopefully they will at least read into the book enough and not take seductive pictures with their fathers.”
That justification is what concerns child advocates the most. Many fear that the words of the idol will possibly lead to a rise in incidents of incest, or at the very least sexual suggestions between fathers and daughters across the country.
“The pictures were bad enough, but many young girls are going to be reading this book and feel that it’s alright to lounge around half naked with their fathers. While undoubtedly many will face rejection from the parent, that could have just as detrimental an effect on the growing sexual identity of Cyrus’ young fans,” said Scrape TV Health analyst Rebecca Phelps. “The commonly accepted thinking is that young girls pattern their view of the opposite sex on their fathers and incestuous relationships and/or rejection of a sexual relationship could irreparably harm these youngsters. Add to that the reality that most fathers in the United States don’t look anything like Billy Ray Cyrus and you have a potentially toxic mix that could damn an entire generation of girls. The publisher should really think long and hard about putting this book on the stands.”
Despite the criticisms, it is not expected that Disney-Hyperion Books will delay or edit the sure-to-be blockbuster memoir which is due in stores next month.
“Disney has sold this girl on her sexuality from the beginning and it’s unlikely that will change in the near future. Anyone who thinks that photo shoot didn’t have the full approval of Disney executives is deluding themselves,” continued Phelps. “There is a kind of inevitability surrounding this and we may be powerless to stop it now. The best suggestion I can make is for fathers of Miley Cyrus fans to start an exercise regime. Crunches, strength training, and Cardio. If you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right.”
