DANIEL STERN DOWN FOR C.H.U.D. REMAKE EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE IS
April 12 2009
Hollywood, CA – Horror has always done well at the movies. From the earliest days of filmmaking to the start of the Hollywood dominance of the medium, horror movies and monsters have been thrilling and chilling audiences for as long as light have flittered on the silver screen. Never was that more true than it was in the 25 years between the mid 1960’s and the late 1980’s. That period created countless classics in the genre –from ‘Night of the Living Dead’ to ‘The Exorcist’ to ‘Hellraiser’ – and spawned entirely new subgenres.
Of all the films that became classics in the period, C.H.U.D. was not one of them. The low budget feature, a common occurrence through the 1980’s, showcased a New York being overtaken by mutated sewer dwelling monsters and though a box office success – it spawned one sequel, ‘C.H.U.D. II - Bud the Chud’ – was widely derided by critics and fans alike as a product of the excess and poor attention to quality for which the VHS laden decade was notorious. At least one person though doesn’t see the film in quite the same way, and if Daniel Stern has his way the Chuds will once again attack film screen, even if no one else is interested.
“I am very proud to have been a part of such an important and beloved entry into the horror genre. My time on the set of C.H.U.D. and the enjoyment that I have had since appearing in it, talking to fans, signing autographs, shows that there is a continued interest in
the franchise,” said Stern. “With so many remakes showing that horror fans are willing to speak with their wallets I can see no better time than now to produce a remake of such a beloved movie.”
Stern starred in the film as A.J. “The Reverend” Shepherd and has appeared in classics such as ‘Diner’, ‘Home Alone’, ‘City Slickers’, and as the narrator of the television series ‘The Wonder Years’. Ironically, Stern landed the role in C.H.U.D. after Robert Englund dropped out to star in ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’. Stern’s feature film debut was in ‘Breaking Away, alongside Jackie Earle Haley who will be appearing in a ‘Nightmare’ remake playing the Englund role.
“Remakes are all the rage in horror right now and that is bad news for the genre in the future. Simply put the number of classics that appeared during that period is unprecedented and that has
led to this current trend of remakes. Unfortunately twenty years from now all film makers are going to have to remake are remakes and that isn’t going to end well,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “As for C.H.U.D. being worthy of the remake
treatment, well, maybe. Most people remember it now from the references on ‘The Simpsons’ rather than actually sitting down and watching it. Maybe if they totally rebrand it and make it for the modern world they may have something, but probably not.”
Stern has worked steadily since his last major film role including stints in ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Prison Break’. He has not been able to recreate the success that he had early on in his career since. A C.H.U.D. would be his first horror remake.
“Really you can do a whole lot better than they did with the original film. It is about mutant monsters living under New York streets and it’s hard to see how that could be altered in a way that would make it believable to a modern audience like has been done with other horror remakes,” continued Temple. “If they are going to remake anything it should be ‘Bud the Chud’. That movie was filled with so much potential and they delivered on so little. If they could continue Stern’s character from the original and just ignore that misbegotten sequel than they might have something that could really grab the public’s attention.”
Scrape TV News attempted to contact other talent involved in the original film but could find no one to speak to.
