JON STEWART CONSIDERS ENDING DAILY SHOW AFTER JIM CRAMER RENEGES ON PROMISE
March 15 2009
New York, NY – Fully dressed down by Jon Stewart, Jim Cramer, the energetic and occasionally obnoxious host of the aptly named ‘Mad Money’, seemed contrite in the wake of Stewart’s careful and intelligent dissection of the misdeeds of CNBC and Cramer himself. The new Jim Cramer lasted about twelve hours before going to back to his mad button pushing antics and the about face has ‘The Daily Show’ host reconsidering his and his show’s future.
The minor feud came about after Stewart comically skewered the financial guru cum television celebrity for the misdeeds of his network and their contributions to the financial collapse. Cramer, seemingly with a sense of humour only when it comes to other people, reacted poorly to the jokes. He challenged Stewart repeatedly which culminated his Daily Show appearance, and his subsequent drubbing.
“Jon took Cramer at his word and feels betrayed. He came away from that meeting feeling that he had done very well and possibly even done some good beyond his own personal satisfaction. Look, Jon is a humble guy and he would never say that he thought that maybe he had helped to turn the economic crisis around and changed the face of news itself, but I’m sure he was thinking that and
now that has all fallen apart,” said a Daily Show insider who preferred to remain anonymous. “I think he kind of feels that this should have been a shining moment for news and it felt like a real victory. Jon does realize what his show is and realizes that he isn’t Jerry Lewis and that his comedy does act as a form of commentary. Cramer’s quick turnaround though shows that his message didn’t sink in and the whole conversation just feels like a waste of time. I don’t think this will be the end of the show, but Jon sure has felt better than he does right now.”
Amongst other comments in the conversation Stewart challenged Cramer on his trusting the word of CEO’s who have appeared on his show, saying instead that “I’m under the assumption that you don’t just take their word at face value.” which of course Stewart fell ironically victim to himself.
“Despite his insistence to the contrary Jon Stewart is a political and social commentator as all truly great comedians have been. His show is smartly written and well executed and the idea that he has the same level of influence as people like say Adam Sandler is ridiculous and he proved that with this episode,” said Scrape TV Media analyst Sarah Piper. “Cramer seemed contrite and human and even though no one actually thought he was suddenly going to change, there’s no doubt that he brought at least moments of truthfulness to the fore. That said, his truth telling was kind of a lie and while it’s likely to have no impact on either person’s career, it’s still gotta sting.”
Many are also pointing to the fact the Cramer made himself available on Thursday, leaving the Friday, a day in which The Daily Show does not air, a Cramer exclusive.
“Now Cramer has the momentum going through the weekend and while Stewart’s writers are no doubt cooking up something for Monday the damage may already be done. Hopefully he will pull himself out of whatever funk he’s in and respond to this betrayal with stoic aplomb,” continued Piper. “As for Cramer, well he’s probably going to go away completely now. Most people only have a sort time in the spotlight, the super bright spotlight at least, and this has been his time. That though isn’t an issue of his lying to Stewart, but just the natural degradation of his stock. Sometimes things just go bad even when you don’t manipulate them and that’s the likely fate for Cramer’s career, provided The Daily Show doesn’t have a job opening soon.”
New episodes of The Daily Show are expected on Monday and it is expected that Stewart will be his usual jovial self after spending the weekend with his family.
