JOHN HUGHES DEATH LEAVES CURLY SUE REMAKE UP IN THE AIR
August 6 2009
New York, NY - For many John Hughes is the voice of a generation. His classic teen films from the 1980’s – Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – are considered by many the cinematic voice of their youth. As a testament to the power and universal nature of those films latter generations

have also taken to those films as cultural touchstones and important commentaries on their own lives and the struggle of adolescence. Though Hughes’ output has been absent for many years his influence has continued as it will likely do for years to come.
That influence is likely to grow even further with the announcement of Hughes’ passing at the age of 59. Hughes reportedly collapsed while taking a morning walk on vacation in New York. His passing marks for many the end era that spawned not only those classic teen hits but also huge franchises such as the National Lampoon ‘Vacation’ films and the ‘Home Alone’ series. Though Hughes himself had not stepped behind the camera since 1991’s ‘Curly Sue’ his legendary status has only continued to grow. It is that latter film though which may suffer most as a result of his death with a recently announced remake now suddenly up in air following the death of its creator.
“We are all shocked and saddened by the death of John. He was a visionary and deeply influential filmmaker whose works have and will continue to stand the test of time. Our hearts go out to his family and friends as well as all his fans whose life he has so touched for the last three decades,” said Warner Brothers, which had been developing the remake, in a statement. “We do not believe this is the appropriate to engage in a discussion regarding the state of any projects we may or may not have in development. This is time to mourn the loss of one of the giants of our industry and a man who has touched the hearts and minds of millions around the world.”
Though unofficial the Curly Sue remake was reportedly to be directed by Hughes himself, marking a much anticipated return for the director. Reportedly Warners had planned to turn the new version of the film into a franchise.
“There’s little doubt that Hughes’ influence will be felt for years and he made more than enough films to solidify his status but there isn’t a film fan that hasn’t been wondering when they would see another movie from him. Unfortunately they know the answer to that now but if things had been a little different they might have been flocking into theatres and seeing his name on screen once again,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Curly Sue is a bit on an odd choice to be sure but perhaps he was looking to change some things from his past and do it right. I don’t think there’s any John Hughes fan that would honestly say that it ranks alongside his other films.”
Starring James Belushi and Kelly Lynch, 'Curly Sue' has long been derided as Hughes’ weakest film and an anomaly amongst his well loved and well rewarded filmography. It’s unclear if Hughes was planning to direct all future instalments of the series.
“Like many great filmmakers he has left behind a legacy of quality and of stories left untold. Unfortunately the tale of Curly Sue has been left at the door of eternity and will never be fully realized. The original film gave us a hint at what may have been but it would have been nice to have seen his true vision realized,” continued Temple. “It would have been interesting to see if he would have brought Belushi back for the new film, perhaps in a different role. He too could use a better reputation than the one the original film left for him.”
Reportedly one other Hughes creation, the Beethoven series, is still on track for a remake.
