KATY PERRY STILL MAKING MUSIC

Hollywood, CA – Along with sun drink, every summer seems to bring a new pop sensation. Songs that seem to carry the very essence of the summer spirit with a light and airy resonance. Those songs tend to carry on their notes the dream of that comes along with the summer months. That free and open life inevitably comes 
crashing down to reality, but for those few sun drenched months seems to be a real possibility of simply lasting forever. It is in those songs that, the soundtrack of summer, that the spirit of the season resides.
It was that feeling that Katy Perry rode to massive success last year. Her monumental hit ‘I Kissed a Girl’ was without a doubt the song of summer 2008. Released in early may, the single carried through and made the singer a massive star. That of course was last year and just as the seasons come and go so too has Perry’s remarkable single success. With a new crop of artists vying for summer success many have already forgotten last year and with it Katy Perry. Despite that fact though Perry has continued to tour and draw crowds as summer success winds its way around the globe. At home though, things have changed. 
“Perry was without a doubt the hit of summer 2008. She may well have has the biggest summer hit in a number of years. It took her from total obscurity to super stardom literally overnight, which of course is exactly what summer hits are supposed to do. By the fall of course she had been overtaken in popularity by Lady Gaga but for those few fleeting months there was no one bigger,” said Scrape TV Music analyst Kevin Connor. “Things fade away and with the end of the hot hot months inevitably so too does the music of the season. Catchy hooks and colourful irreverence can only last so long and for Perry it lasted about three months. That isn’t a bad thing or a good thing, it just is and she’s had more success than likely anyone would have imagined.”
Perry is currently touring Europe which traditionally falls slightly behind North American trends allowing artists and record companies to keep the momentum going.
“Europe has summer at the same time as the United States but they have a different feel to the season. Generally speaking Europeans are more relaxed year round so the summer doesn’t resonate in the same way so the kind of airy pop songs that identify summer in the U.S. work differently in Europe. Luckily Europe has an enormous appetite for shallow pop songs so it is easy to extend success there,” continued Connor. “The general rule of thumb is that you tell Europeans how successful this artist was in the States and then when you come back you tell Americans how successful they were in Europe. If everything goes right the two work in lock step to create a behemoth of pop success whether people want it or not. If you can follow that up with a cleverly crafted follow-up song, then you’re in.”
Perry has made no announcement as to when her next album will be released but many expect it will quickly follow the end of her current tour. Already the expectation is that it will be less successful than the first but better appreciated by critics.
“Luckily for record companies they have this terrific template that they can just apply to any artist. As long as they have the right look and the right A&R people they are sitting pretty and ready to create yet another song of the summer that sticks with people for at least the season,” continued Connor. “The great thing for music fans is that formula guarantees a great summer and the ability to almost completely forget about the rougher months, or even what happened the year before. It really makes everyone happy.”
Planning is already underway for the summer hit of 2010 which will likely feature a young pop starlet similar to Miley Cyrus.
