JON STEWART MAY DROP DAILY SHOW; GO BACK TO ACTING
November 1 2009
New York, NY – Not since Jerry Seinfeld starred in a little sitcom has a comedian had the kind of mainstream breakthrough success that Jon Stewart has enjoyed over the last ten years. His rise to prominence, not only as a comedian but also as a political
commentator, is something that few could have expected given his early days in the industry. A failed talk show and small roles in even smaller movies were not the kind of resume that would lead one to believe that the person involved would one day come to be regarded as highly as Stewart has been since taking over ‘The Daily Show’.
Despite that success and acclaim, which only seems to grow with ever episode, Stewart has reportedly become restless of late. According to Comedy Central insiders, Stewart has been taking more and more about leaving the hit program and returning to his first love, acting. Though he would likely take a major pay cut from reported $14 million he receives every year Stewart apparently feels that the bank account hit would be well worth it for the personal and artistic satisfaction afforded to him by the ancient art of performance.
“Jon loves The Daily Show, make no mistake about that, and he is very proud of what
he has been able to build there but he’s getting restless. I guess that happens to

everyone after doing something for so long. He apparently isn’t thinking about leaving because of a dislike of the program or of the network but because he actively wants to pursue something that he really cares about. It’s really a mixed bag of emotions for him,” said out insider. “He knows all too well what he would be losing if he were to leave but he is getting older and I think realizes that his opportunities in the acting realm are going to dry up sooner rather than later and he really wants to take a shot, a real shot. He was different after the Oscars a few years ago, but it’s only lately that he’s really been making noise. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go.”
Stewart has previously performed in pictures such as ‘The Faculty’, ‘Big Daddy’, and ‘Death to Smoochy’, a role which he frequently mentions on his program. He has continued to act while performing his duties on ‘The Daily Show’ but it’s believed the daily grind of that program is inhibiting his ability to land meatier roles.
“I think it’s clear to everyone, including Stewart himself, that he won’t all of a sudden become a major movie star. For a variety of reasons, not the least of which is age, those days are far behind him. That doesn’t mean that he can’t have an effect though, that he can’t do some valuable work. Male actors in particular age very well in Hollywood on the smaller scale,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Of course the real issue here is his personal creative satisfaction. If he feels that he has something to add to the community or that acting would make him happier, then that’s all that really matters.”
Though achieving little in the way of critical acclaim, Stewart has routinely been praised by his co-stars which include such heavyweights as Harland Williams, Jordana Brewster, and Ralph Macchio.
“The real problem for him would be what kind of roles he would be able t o land. He’s obviously a very recognizable face now and it would be very difficult for audiences to completely accept him in smaller roles. That could prove to be an obstacle for many directors and producers and make it an upward battle for him,” continued Temple. “Of course one never knows unless they try and though he might be losing a lot by pursuing this dream, what he gains in personal satisfaction might more than make up for it. Hopefully he finds what he is looking for.”
Stewart is still signed to ‘The Daily Show’ through 2010.
