PATRICK SWAYZE DEATH PUTS GHOST SEQUEL ON FAST TRACK
September 14 2009
Los Angeles, CA – There are few stars that had more success in the 80’s than Patrick Swayze. Though he was Thirty-Five years old by the time he had his first major success in the legendary ‘Dirty Dancing’ that role, alongside appearances in
cult-classics ‘The Outsiders’ and ‘Red Dawn’, solidified him as one of the biggest movie actors of the decade, securing place in the hearts of men and women around the world for all time.
It wasn’t until his role in the blockbuster ‘Ghost’ that Swayze truly became a major movie star. The role of the recently deceased Sam Wheat trying to avenge his murder and protect his girlfriend, the soon-to-be star Demi Moore, melted the hearts of women across the globe, making him wealthy and famous beyond anything he had experienced before. It was that film that fans had
been hoping would return to the big screen, something that now seems to be a
fantasy with the announcement that the 57-year old actor has succumbed to pancreatic cancer, or so it would seem. Though it has only been hours since his death, the studio behind the original movie is already talking up a sequel and have plans to integrate the recently deceased actor into the film.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the Swayze family. Patrick was a true humanitarian and deeply pleasant human being who faced his illness with courage and dignity, never allowing the cold hard reality of his mortality to destroy his wonderful spirit,” said the studio in a statement. “While we will allow the Swayze family and his fans time to mourn we would like to take this opportunity to announce a sequel to Patrick’s greatest movie, Ghost. We cannot think of a more fitting tribute to one of the most beloved performers in this studio’s history than to present his fans with one more opportunity to spend time in a darkened theatre.”
The studio went on to say that they were planning on a 2011 release for the film and that Swayze would in fact make an appearance in the film, though his role will be significantly diminished from the original due to the fact that he has passed on from the corporeal realm.
“There have been many occasions where studios and filmmakers have pursued film projects after the death of their lead actor but rarely has it happened so soon after the death. That may ultimately have been a bad move. I can certainly understand the emotion and the desire to exploit an opportunity but my guess is many fans and film watchers will find this a little too soon,” said
Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “It makes sense, I mean who better to play the role than Swayze especially now but it may be a little soon. Of course that will all be forgotten when he appears onscreen and, presumably, recreates that pottery scene from the original film. I can imagine that will soothe over a lot of hurt feelings.”
Paramount did state that they have been in talks with Demi Moore to reprise her role. It’s believed she will return as she has little else to do.
“Hopefully they will be able to resurrect the entire cast for the new. That would be quite a feat because a number of players have passed on but ultimately would result in a loving tribute and boffo box office. I’m sure there is no better tribute to Swayze than a blockbuster film, the likes of which he hasn’t had in years,” continued Temple. “Bringing back a dead franchise like this is exactly what Hollywood has gotten good at in recent years and I anticipate that this will be just one more feather in Paramount’s cap. There’s really no one better at bringing back dead franchises than Paramount and this will likely be no exception.”
It’s believed that Moore and Whoopi Goldberg will be alive for filming. Information on the mortality of Tony Goldwyn, who played the villain in the original, is not yet available.
