Atlanta, GA – Outside Barack Obama and Sarah Palin, perhaps the two biggest names to come out of this year’s election process have been reporter John King and the big board. With Election Day drawing ever closer many fans have been left to wonder what will become of the pair. CNN has finally given those fans piece of mind by announcing a new show that will push the duo into new levels of celebrity.
Simply titled ‘John King and the Big Board’, the new show will begin airing in late November, starting initially only on Saturdays as a lead in to ‘Larry King Live’.
“We are pleased to announce that John and the Big Board will be around for a long time to come,” said a spokesperson for the network. “The new show will begin airing only on Saturdays but we anticipate moving it to primetime weekdays before too long. The technology behind the Big Board and John’s ability to manipulate it opens up all kind of opportunities for us to explore. John and the board have a synergy that can't be denied. John and Paul; Martin and Lewis; Abbott and Costello. We think this is a partnership for the ages. And Hell, we gave D.L. Hughley a show."
CNN has also reportedly invested in another board, though they have not made it clear if that purchase is for the new show or another purpose entirely. The prospect of King having to manipulate two boards at once has some excited at the possibilities, but for others it has set even more tongues wagging.
“King seems to be the only one able to manipulate the board, and from what I’ve heard he manipulates it a little too well for some people’s comfort, especially his new wife,” said Scrape TV Media analyst Sarah Piper. “Like in any office people are talking and the possibility of yet another board distracting King. Add to the fact that his new wife also works for the network and you have this incredibly complicated triangle.”
King and Bash were married in May of this year, just as the celebrity status of the reporter and the board was beginning to peak. King has denied that his interaction with the board is anything but professional, but that hasn’t stopped the talk.
“Aside from him spending so much time with the board, the reality is he has become a big star and that is difficult for any couple especially when they are in the same field,” continued Piper. “I can’t see this new show as doing anything but exacerbating the chatter. Of course no one but the two of them know exactly what goes on behind closed doors, but even rumours can be hurtful.”
The success of the Big Board has also sent rivals FOX News and MSNBC scrambling to keep up while not appearing to be copying. CNN has drawn record ratings for both the primary season and the current election run, much of which has been attributed to King and the Board.
“It’s going to hard for them to find an adequate replacement. FOX in particular has already given up the ghost for the election season, but news and ratings go on and they will need to come up with an answer,” continued Piper. “If this show is a hit, and there’s no reason to assume it will be anything but, CNN is going to permanently take back the ratings crown. White boards and bland presentations just won’t do it anymore. Fox upped the ante with the news ticker and breaking news and became the ratings champion, now CNN has come roaring back and they may be here to stay. FOX in particular will throw a bunch of things out trying to take back the crown, but it’s going to be a hard row for them this time. I can’t even imagine what it will take to win this time.”
For his part King has been humble on his recent success, but admits that he is excited about the new show. “The possibilities are endless. We plan the take the board on the road; take it to people on the street; who knows, we could end up with a sitcom out of all this, but it’s all in the name of news.”
The first episode is scheduled to air November 22.
