Los Angeles, CA – A 5.4 earthquake shook Los Angeles and San Diego earlier today, shaking some houses, breaking some windows, but causing no significant injuries. The quake was the first major tremor in the region in a number of years, the last was a 6.7 in January of 1994, sending shudders as far away as Tijuana and Las Vegas.
“We had forgotten what a big earthquake felt like, at least I did. It’s a drill for the big one that's going to happen someday." said seismologist Kate Hutton. Reports coming in from around the area mention swaying buildings and major disruptions in communication and emergency services.
“It’s been an interesting day,” said Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. “Luckily it appears no one was seriously hurt. I imagine there are some people a little shaken, but we’ll be okay. We know earthquakes.”
Southern California is one of the most seismically active areas of the world, with approximately 10,000 quakes a year, though most are far too small to be felt. Quakes are expected in the area and most residents shake them off, so to speak. Others though see the quake as a more ominous sign, specifically actor Sharon Stone.
Stone was heavily criticized in May after declaring at the Cannes film festival that the devastating quake in China was a result of Karma in respect to the Chinese government’s treatment of Tibet. The magnitude 8.0 quake struck on May 12 and resulted in the deaths of nearly 70,000 people, mostly in the impoverished Sichuan province. The ‘Basic Instinct’ star, who was ripped in the world press for her comments, has come out swinging again.
“It’s no coincidence that the Olympics are just around the corner. I believe that karma has truly struck me this time. Los Angeles is where I have made my career and it is hit by the exact same phenomenon that I was so insensitive about earlier this year. I can’t help but see this as karma,” Stone said to reporters. “Karma works in strange ways and had I not made those comments earlier this year I do not believe this would have happened. I will take this humbly, but I do still believe in a free Tibet.”
Asked about her comments, California Governor and former Sharon Stone co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger had little to say. “This earthquake was not about Sharon Stone or China or karma. This is California; we have earthquakes all the time. Our focus is on restoring facilities and calm to the area, not on Sharon Stone’s guilt complex. If the fates were going to go after her for anything, it would be Basic Instinct 2.”
Stone later said she planned on praying for the people of California and Tibet. She also said that she was looking forward to watching the Olympic Games from her Beverly Hills mansion, which was undamaged in the quake.
