DOLPH LUNDGREN TO ATTEMPT CAREER RESURRECTION, CANCER CURE

December 7 2008

Stockholm, Sweden – Through the 1980’s there were a handful of names that dominated the box office when it came to action movies. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal all enjoyed massive fame and success throughout the decade. Dolph Lundgren, unlike those other names, never achieved major success on his own.sylvester stallone and dolph lundgren in rocky 4

The Swedish actor’s biggest hits, from his start in Stallone’s ‘Rocky IV’ to his final hit alongside Van Damme in ‘Universal Soldier’, always came in partnership with another star. That fact has not stopped the star from continuing to produce star in movie after movie no matter the quality or the co-star. Lundgren though, inspired by the recent success of Stallone and Van Damme, is determined to finally have the success he had always worked towards, though it’s unlikely any of his former friends will be helping.

“I watched the trailer for Jean-Claude’s new movie 'JCVD' and realized that what he and Sylvester had done was just admit to the world what they are. We all tried to be something more than what people expected of us and that was our mistake. They have shown that being self-aware goes a long way towards resurrecting a career,” said Lundgren. “There’s a new Punisher movie out, and I keep hearing about a possible He-Man movie. The signs keep pointing towards my return to big time movies.”dolph lundgren shirtless

Lundgren’s last major movie was 1995’s ‘Johnny Mnemonic’ alongside Keanu Reeves. Since then the Swedish actor has appeared in numerous direct to video movies which have had little exposure to movie fans or anyone outside the film crew. Nonetheless, Lundgren feels that his career could be primed for a comeback.

“Somebody has to star in movies and I’m somebody. Just the other day I was walking down the street and this man I passed did this double take and I knew he knew who I was. I can tell what movies people fans are of; he was a Universal Soldier guy. Things like that show me that I’ve still got it,” continued Lundgren. “I’m still working on an idea to bring myself back to the spotlight, but I’m always working on projects.”

Lundgren will also be appearing in the upcoming film “The Expendables’ alongside former co-star Stallone, as well as future DTV stars Jason Statham and Jet Li. The actor though isn’t relying on one movie to resurrect his mainstream career.dolph lundgren smiling

“My career really began with Sylvester and now that I will be appearing with him again it feels like a rebirth, but one thing I learned from the last go around is that you need to follow up success with movies that people actually want to see. I need to make sure to have something waiting in the wings so I have this one-two punch and show people what I can do,” concluded Lundgren. “It’s not like I’m doing brain surgery or trying to find a cure to cancer or anything. I mean I’d like to find a cure for cancer but I’m an action movie star, not a scientific researcher so that’s unlikely. I’d probably need to go back to school for that, so I’ll just stick to kicking and shooting. I know how to do that.”

Lundgren’s latest DTV film ‘Direct Contact’ was released earlier this year to little acclaim or viewers.dolph lundgren masters of the universe

“Lundgren was never a major star, never on the level of some of the other eighties stars so I don’t know what kind of comeback he’s looking to have,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Is he looking for a return to the heady days of ‘Red Scorpion’ or ‘I come in Peace’? I mean all power to him, he seems like a nice guy and everything but some people just need to realize that their time has come and gone. Realize that and accept it, not exploit it to try and make a comeback. The thing with Lundgren is he had his shot. He was this muscular, intelligent, charismatic presence. He even spoke English better than his counterparts including the native English speakers and it just didn’t work out for him. He had his shot and it didn’t work out for him, kinda like the dinosaurs. Best of luck to him, but he shouldn’t hold out a whole lot of hope.”

We attempted to contact representatives for Steven Seagal to find out if he wasplanning a similar type of comeback but the phones had been disconnected.
