EXPERTS BETTING AGAINST HEATH LEDGER OSCAR WIN AFTER GOLDEN GLOBE SNUB

Hollywood, CA – The Golden Globes have long been the principle barometer by which prognosticators have predicted the Academy Awards. Success with the Hollywood Foreign Press often means success with the Hollywood elite. Equally though, failure or perceived snub at the Globes can often make what at one point seemed inevitable a fleeting dream. Many are predicting that very thing for Heath Ledger after his no-show for the awards last night.

“Ledger seems to have a lot of good will directed towards him, but not showing up to accept his award might just undo his chances for greater glory. Keep in mind that he snubbed the premiere of the film and dropped out of filming for his next movie and that type of behaviour is rarely rewarded,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “People do like Ledger and his performance in The Dark Knight is definitely deserving of the award but you can only spit in people’s faces for so long before they turn their back on you. The climb to the top can be tough, but the climb back is even worse. Ledger should have a chat with Mickey Rourke before this gets out of control.”

It is still widely anticipated that Ledger will receive the Academy Award nomination for his role as The Joker in the latest Batman film, but his seemingly inevitable run towards actually winning the award may now be tarnished by his non appearance at the ceremony.

“I get that they wanted this ‘death’ thing to help promote the film. Of course it appears that it may actually be something more serious than that with reports of him running around California dressed as The Joker, but this has gone on a little too long. His handlers need to get control of the situation and bring him down to Earth,” continued Temple. “Obviously he has a promising career ahead of him and it would be a shame to see that disappear as a result of self indulgence. Hollywood, like life, doesn’t give a whole lot of second chances so he’d be advised to take the one he’s been given.”

Persistent rumours of Ledger’s death and non-death have pervaded the blogosphere and water coolers since late January, just as the hype machine for the ultimately massively successful ‘The Dark Knight’ was just beginning to ramp up. Ledger left production of the Terry Gilliam film ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’ and disappeared. The film was later rewritten to accommodate his disappearance.

“You wouldn’t have seen him jumping ship on a Steven Spielberg film, but since it was Terry Gilliam no one batted an eye. Gilliam has more failed productions than successful ones so I doubt anyone paid it much mind,” continued Temple. “Nonetheless you build up a reputation and this will catch up to him. It’s not like he’s a drunk or popping pills or anything, but unreliability can be just as damning as any addiction, even if it’s genuinely a result of mental health issues. Johnny Depp won’t always be there to bail you out.”

Depp was one of three actors who replaced Ledger in the Gilliam film.

Of course this awards season does have one comeback story which could inspire Ledger. Mickey Rourke, whose career was considered more or less dead for almost two decades, is the favourite for best actor for his role in ‘The Wrestler’. His well documented fall and continuing resurrection could act as a template for Ledger should he continue to fall.

“Mickey Rourke has had an incredible comeback and it will be interesting to see how far he takes it before collapsing again but it could act as inspiration for Ledger,” concluded Temple. “He is the breakout star in one of the most successful films of all time and he should be at the top of his game. Unfortunately self destruction at the peak of success is all too common. Mickey Rourke is not the person one should be taking lessons from. I’d say his chances at winning the Oscar has been severely limited by his absence, but we will see. Hopefully he’ll at least show up at the Kodak theatre, without The Joker getup.”

Calls to Ledger’s agents went unanswered.
