JAMES CAMERON AND FOX TO PRODUCE TITANIC SEQUEL

October 7 2008

Los Angeles, CA – Academy award winning director James Cameron has announced plans to produce a follow up to the biggest box office hit of all time. Cameron and studios Twentieth Century Fox and Paramount have announced that they plan to give Titanic the sequel treatment.

“It is an idea that has been rolling around in my head even when we were shooting the first film. It’s obviously taken a long time, but I feel that we have the creative aspect of a sequel locked and we are going to move forward,” said Cameron to reporters. “Obviously because of the way the first one ended most people would assume that it would be difficult to follow up, and it has been, but I feel the idea we have is going to be a delightful surprise to fans.”titanic movie poster

Cameron wouldn’t go into too much detail regarding the film, but did indicate that not only would the Titanic’s sister ship SS Olympia be involved, but the sunken Titanic herself and the iceberg that sunk the ship would play a role.
“The first story was about love. The next story will be about revenge,” continued Cameron. “It’s a much different story but one that I think fans of the original can connect to. It will take place in a contemporary time frame to the original. It has to if we want Leo and Kate back.”

Representatives for the studio stated that offers have been submitted to stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet to reprise their roles from the original film. The announcement of the sure-to-be blockbuster sequel has set all of Hollywood abuzz.

“It may seem like odd material for a sequel but money talks and the original obviously speaks very loudly,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “I’d imagine that DiCaprio would somehow come back as a ghost or in flashbacks. What I find most intriguing is Cameron stating that it was a revenge story. Presumably they are going to take some kind of revenge against the iceberg. You have to wonder if they had the kind of firepower to deal with that kind of thing back then. Of course, they could always time travel. That’s an easy plot device.”

Pre-production on the film has already begun but filming will not commence until Cameron has finished work on ‘Avatar’ which is due to be released next year, marking a long awaited return to theatres for the director who has not released a major theatrical film since the original Titanic was released. The original film won eleven Academy Awards and is the largest grossing film in Hollywood history. james cameron oscars

Cameron has denied that this new project is related to the ever increasing budget on ‘Avatar’ or a perceived creative void on the part of the director.

“This film comes from an organic place; it is not motivated by any other factor such as money or lack of originality. I like sequels, remember I directed Piranha 2, Aliens, and Terminator 2 and I did a pretty good job with those. This one will be just as good as the original and be just as big a hit with the fans.”

Release for the film is tentatively scheduled for 2011
