JESSICA ALBA SCHOOLS BILL O’REILLY ON WWII; CONFUSED ABOUT PREVIOUS NIGHT’S DINNER

January 28 2009

Hollywood, CA – Movie star Jessica Alba is striking out against celebrity bloggers and Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly after the host insinuated that the star didn’t know World War II history. The incident stemmed from a brief interview with a Fox News reporter in which Alba stated “be neutral. Be Sweden about it.” O’Reilly took her to task over that comment, as well as her negative comments about him personally, by declaring the star was wrong about Swedish neutrality during the war and suggesting she meant Switzerland.

Alba responded on her Myspace blog.

“Last week, Mr. Bill O’Reilly and some really classy sites, ie.TMZ, insinuated I was dumb by claiming Sweden was a neutral country. It’s so sad to me that you think the only neutral country during WWII was Switzerland,” wrote Alba. “Check out: [Wikipedia Link] if you want to see what I was referring to. I appreciate the name calling and the accurate reporting. Keep it up!!”

While some have disputed the less than formidable counter argument by Alba, the facts of the Swedish neutrality are more or less accurate. Sweden has been a neutral country since the end of the Napoleonic Wars and remained so through the second world war, but that neutrality did lead to collaboration with Nazi Germany during the war. In fact Sweden was one of the largest suppliers of raw material in the Nazi war effort and even allowed Wehrmacht soldiers to cross the country during the attempted invasion of Norway

“The Swedes were officially neutral but because of that that had no choice but to bow to the whims of the more powerful countries, and demands came most significantly from the Germans. Many historians believe that without Swedish support the Nazi war machine would have more or less ground to a halt,” said Scrape TV Historical analyst Lars Luger. “Technically Alba was right, practically not so much. The facts though are kind of beside the point because I don’t think anyone ever has used Sweden as a basis for a neutrality argument. Being neutral like Switzerland is the statement. What she said would be similar to saying something like comparing apples and carrots. It’s still technically right, but no one ever says it. If you’re going to quote clichés to try and look clever you need to get them right, at least when you are in the public eye.”

Alba’s response has drawn a clarification from O’Reilly and has sparked, ironically, a war of words between celebrity bloggers and the personalities themselves.

“Alba started a little feud and for some reason O’Reilly has given her purchase by airing and acknowledging her statement. It may be that he is attempting to appeal to a younger demographic but he and his people need to understand that Jessica Alba doesn’t really have any fans, at least not any fans who have any interest in her speaking,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Him getting all uppity about something Jessica Alba has to say kind of devalues him and his show. It really doesn’t matter who is right or even kind of right, they both just look stupid. She also used Wikipedia as her sole source of reference and that wouldn’t fly in the third grade, never mind debate between two adults. Never mind the questionable notion that neutrality against Hitler and the Third Reich was an admirable act.”

The countries at the centre of the controversy have remained, as one would expect, mum in the debate between the two American celebrities.

“Many smaller countries get a kick out being mentioned by major America personalities but in this case neither seems to be all that interested,” continued Luger. “The Swiss of course have the UN, The Red Cross, the IOC, the Alps, chocolate and worldwide respect, and the Swedes have IKEA, so they have other things to occupy their attention. The nature of the duo’s celebrity status is also an issue of course. O’Reilly is really just and American celebrity and Alba isn’t really much of a celebrity at all. She’s beautiful of course but that isn’t really fame. We are talking about Sweden as well. Compared to the women in that country Alba’s only marginally better looking than O’Reilly so her claim to fame is pretty much moot.”

We attempted to contact representatives for both parties. A spokesperson for Fox News said O’Reilly was currently formulating a response to a comment from Shannon Elizabeth. Representatives for Alba directed us to her Myspace and Wikipedia pages and stated that she had London Broil and a small salad the night before the comment. Sweden has remained neutral.
