Los Angeles, CA – Rumours of the death of comedian Katt Williams, which have been roaming around the web for days, have proven to be false. The talk of Williams death began early Saturday morning with the report of a plane crash has proven to be false but has sparked new interest in the comedian and his upcoming DVD release in a little over a week.
‘It’s Pimpin’ Pimpin’ is due to be released November 11 and has gained all new attention due to the rumour. Williams, a cult favourite who is best known for his roles in the ‘Friday’ series of films, the animated TV show ‘The Boondocks’, and a cameo appearance in this year’s massive hit game ‘Grand Theft Auto 4’, is alive and well and according to spokespeople preparing for the DVD release.
“In the web age it’s difficult to discern whether a rumour is actually a rumour or some kind of publicity stunt. Unless a person actually comes out and says it’s a stunt you never really know because it’s so easy to hide it amongst the misinformation that so pervades the web,” said Scrape TV Media analyst Sarah Piper. “It’s even difficult to be clearly cynical in the web age. Do you criticize the artist and their publicists or do you criticize the web trolls for causing chaos? Regardless of who began this particular rumour, it’s taken Williams from a personal favourite into the realm of real celebrity so it’s a good thing for him either way.”
This is of course not the only recent web rumour that has taken hold in the public’s consciousness. In August a CNN I Reporter generated a false story about Apple chairman Steve Jobs being rushed to hospital after a massive heart attack. That particular rumour caused Apple stock to drop dramatically and at least temporarily caused investors to lose millions. There is no evidence that this latest rumour will have an impact anywhere near that level.
“Steve Jobs is a big deal and as many fans as Katt Williams may have he is not nearly that important,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “There’s little doubt that this will have a positive impact on his career but he’s an artist, not a chairman. Artists value tends to go up after death, the same can’t be said for companies. I expect sales for the DVD to maybe not sky rocket, but definitely swift sales.”
Reps for Williams did not comment on the rumours, leaving only rumours of his not having died to roam the web.
“That’s the difficult thing about the internet age. Does a rumour of a rumour have weight? Urban myth has let people like Elvis Presley and Tupac live forever but in the web age that kind of chatter has a whole new level of penetration, and subsequently impact on sales,” continued Temple. “We may get to a point where we actually believe an Elvis-like myth. Considering the amount of material that Tupac has released since his death, if he had died in the internet age people might actually believe he is still alive. That kind of chatter did wonders for Heath Ledger, might even win him an Oscar and it remains to be seen if he will show up to accept.”
Williams is ‘survived’ by his eight children and his biography on Wikipedia. His new DVD will be available November 11 for $19.99 and on blu ray for $29.99.
