Hollywood, CA – Still basking in the success of ‘Iron Man’, Marvel Studios has been busily planning a number of films including ‘Thor’ which with ‘Iron Man’ will tie into an ‘Avengers’ movie in 2012. Going with part of the formula that proved successful, Marvel hopes to strike gold again by casting another previously washed up eighties star for the upcoming feature.
Lou Diamond Phillips, who made his name in eighties hits ‘La Bamba’ and ‘Young Guns’, may seem an odd choice at first to play the comic version of the Norse God of Thunder, Marvel apparently executives believe that the against type casting that they used in ‘Iron Man’ will reap rewards once again.
“By zigging when everyone expected us to zag we captured lightning in a bottle, so to speak, and we think it can happen again,” said an insider close to the negotiations. “Lou obviously has nothing in common with Thor physically, mentally, or philosophically, but we feel that this outside the box thinking will pay off just like it did with Iron Man. Wait and see, it will surprise everyone.”
Phillips was part of the same group of actors that rose to massive success in the eighties. Dubbed the ‘Brat Pack’ Phillips, much like ‘Iron Man’ Robert Downey Jr. was never a full-fledged member of that group, but instead stayed on the periphery and carved out a unique career of his own. Of course Downey quickly broke out of teen heart throb persona and gave acclaimed performances in a number of films. After his initial career success, Phillips appeared in films such as ‘Dangerous Touch’ and “Orion Scope: The Grip of Christ”. Aside from the more limited resume, Phillips is of mixed white, Asian, and American Indian heritage, quite a stretch from a Nordic God.
“Conventional wisdom would have us casting the right person for the role, but what we learned with Downey is that throwing ‘conventional wisdom’ out the window and doing something different can be a win, and we expect it will be this time,” continued our insider. “He’ll have to hit the gym before we start shooting, but other than that he will be fine.”
Marvel also has plans on continuing the ‘Hulk’ franchise, possibly with a different actor than Edward Norton who appeared in last summer’s moderately successful franchise reboot, and a ‘Captain America’ film. All four characters will collide in the ‘Avengers’ film.
“Everyone kinda went huh? When they cast Downey but it worked well. I can’t see this one going the same way honestly,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Casting against type is fine and all, but this is way outside type. Thor is a massively muscled, blonde haired, blue-eyed God. Phillips is not that and he’s honestly not a good enough actor to overcome that. To be fair, Downey isn’t a good enough actor to have overcome that. We are definitely becoming more colour blind as a society but this is taking that to an extreme. Are they going to get Emilio Estevez as Captain America? There’s a reason most of these guys were left in the eighties, a lot of very good reasons.”
Despite the obstacles though Hollywood’s new interest in against type casting doesn’t seem to be ebbing anytime soon. Singer Beyonce Knowles is in talks to take on the role of Amazonian warrior ‘Wonder Woman’ in an upcoming film version.
“Barack Obama is great and all, but this is getting a little much,” continued Temple. “Wonder who they will get to portray him in the movie of his life? John Cho maybe? Maybe we'll have to see which of this generations stars are washed up before we can start casting those roles.”
