OLIVER STONE TO CONTINUE ALPHABET WITH ‘R’
October 17 2008
Los Angeles, CA – With the critical and sure to be commercial success of Oliver Stone’s ‘W’, released this Friday, the once pre-eminent and controversial director seems to be back on his game. The George Bush biography is expected to be at the top of the box office this week and that is encouraging Stone to follow up with another letter.
“'R' will be about Dick Rumsfeld; from his days as a young man, to his rise to power through the 80’s, to his fall. It will be an epic story of a man who rose to enormous heights and then fell so precipitously,” said Stone. It’s not unlike most of the other movies that I’ve made except that this one will start with a different letter.”
Stone also said that he liked the simplicity of working on ‘W’ which was shot and edited in a span of only a few months.
“It felt like it did when I was a young filmmaker; getting up. Shooting, editing, then starting a new one. I felt like a new man and at 62, that’s a really great feeling,” continued the director. “The one letter title is symbolic of the simplicity of that time and I want to continue with that feeling. I realize I’m doing it a little out of order, but eventually I plan to shoot the entire alphabet.”
Stone also announced that he has teamed with The Electric Company, producers of Sesame Street, to help with the financing of the films.
“Sesame Street has taught the alphabet to children and adults all over the world so they are the perfect partner for us. We don’t have any plans to cross over any of the characters from our films to Sesame Street or vice versa. I think Rumsfeld would just scare the hell out of the kids.”
The director gave no release date for the new letter.
“I think it’s great that Stone is getting back to his roots. The Salvador/Wall Street/Platoon/Talk Radio days were the most creative and productive of his career,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “If he is getting back to that then we are in for a ride. I’m just curious to see whether or not he will be able to get through the whole alphabet. Realistically he is 62 years old and there are 26 letters in the alphabet. He’s going to have to pick up the pace if he’s going to get through all of them. I can’t even imagine what ‘Z’ or ‘Q’ are going to be about.”
Stone reportedly turned down a multi-million dollar offer to direct the upcoming ‘Wall Street’ sequel to focus on his new plan.
“Directors have done some interesting series in the past but I don’t know of a 26 part series of films. That is either genius or maniacal,” continued Temple. “Of course with Stone it’s likely both. That guy is a little loopy.”
While no casting has been announced, it is expected that the majority of actors from ‘W’ will appear in ‘R’. Stone regular James Woods is apparently the favourite to play Ronald Reagan and Charlie Sheen is talks to play Saddam Hussein. ‘R’ is expected in theatres this time next year.
Stone also stated that he was contemplating a series of films based on numbers as well once this series is complete.
"We'll see. There are a lot of numbers though."
