NEWS > ENTERTAINMENT > ROBERT DENIRO VOWS TO NEVER APPEAR IN ANOTHER GOOD MOVIE

New York, NY – It is commonly accepted that as artists age their level of production and the quality of the material they produce diminishes. From DaVinci to Spielberg, artists have always struggled with the degradation of skills and ambition and while some are able to at least temporarily overcome the ravages of time, others seem to embrace their creative collapse with zeal, enjoying the mediocrity that time brings. None though have fallen quite so far in recent years as Robert DeNiro and the actor seems content with that fact.
‘Righteous Kill’, which releases on DVD this Tuesday, pairs DeNiro stars with fellow acting legend Al Pacino, marks for some the continuing slide that has been the career of the multiple Academy award winning actor. The one time star of such classics as ‘Taxi Driver, ‘Raging Bull’, and ‘Goodfellas’ has not had a critical success in almost a decade and equally has not had a financial success in nearly as long.
“It’s an odd thing because generally when an actor sells out they go after successful movies. They actually make an effort to have some kind of success but DeNiro seems either unwilling or incapable of starring in a good movie,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “He did direct and appear in ‘The Good Shepherd’ which despite its failings was at least an effort. Directing seems to be where his heart is at but he seems to be totally missing the point of selling out because there are no sales to speak of.”
‘Righteous Kill’ was considered a box office flop for the one time acting powerhouse duo of DeNiro and Pacino who first appeared together in the legendary ‘Godfather, part II’ and who last appeared in the well regarded ‘Heat’. The newest pairing of the duo, which many film fans had been looking forward to, seemed to impress no one upon its release in dead of late summer.
“The 1970’s was without a doubt the golden age of cinema and the performers that came out of that era are legends. Names like Streep, Hoffman, Duvall, and Hackman immediately bring to mind a certain level of quality, and most of those have maintained that more or less. Sure they aren’t in groundbreaking films that change the medium any more but they have aged gracefully,” continued Temple. “’Raging Bull’ and ‘Hide & Seek’ really shouldn’t belong in the same filmography. There’s not even a sense of fun in anything he’s doing. One would guess he’s doing it for the money but he’s never been a huge box office draw that that likely isn’t going to go very far.”
DeNiro also famously pulled out of another pay check in September when he stormed off the set of ‘Edge of Darkness’ which would have out him alongside fellow fallen star Mel Gibson. The actor himself has been his normally un-talkative self in respect to the state of his career, but rumours indicate that the legend himself is oblivious to the degrading state of his art.
“I don’t know of a career or a legacy that has gone quite so off the rails as DeNiro’s has done. None of his contemporaries have gone the way of self parody like he has done,” concluded Temple. “Of course few have hit the heights that he did either. You would think though he’d still have some self respect and actually continue to make an effort of some kind. Of course that would require some level of self-awareness which he apparently doesn’t have.”
