SPIELBERG TO REMAKE OLDBOY; CHAN-WOOK PARK TO REMAKE JAWS AS REVENGE

November 8 2008

Hollywood, CA – Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are reportedly in talks to remake the 2003 Korean film ‘Oldboy’. The film, which tells the story of a man imprisoned for fifteen years and who seeks revenge against his captors upon release, is widely considered a classic by film fans and critics alike. The news has also prompted Chan-Wook Park, director of the original film, to remake one of Spielberg’s classic films, ‘Jaws’.steven spielberg

Like Spielberg, Park is early talks to helm the remake which will feature a similar revisionist attitude that the ‘Oldboy’ remake is likely to have. Reportedly the revised storyline will revolve around the shark seeking revenge against the human islanders.

“I do not make movies like Steven Spielberg and he does not make movies like me,” said Park in an interview. “I have a great deal for respect for Mr. Spielberg and his films, but I must make the film that speaks to me. Sharks have been hunted for many years and they must have revenge.”

While no details have been released on the ‘Oldboy’ remake, speculation about how the super power duo of Spielberg and Smith will alter the dark storyline has fans in an uproar. jaws movie poster

“The original film is essentially a horror movie and Spielberg hasn’t delved into that territory since the days of Duel and Jaws,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “It’s not likely you’ll see a whole lot of hammer kills by Will Smith, and the Octopus scene is very unlikely. It’s odd territory for a populist pair like these two to enter into considering how dark it is. No doubt they will add a few explosions and a love interest that isn’t the protagonist’s daughter.”
Both films will be distributed by Universal and Spielberg is also reportedly heavily involved in the development of both films.

“Park is trying to be subversive but once he is drawn into the Hollywood machine he’s going to quickly realize that high minded intentions and issues like redemption really only happen on the silver screen” continued Temple. “There’s simply too much money involved to allow a director to make a big movie into a personal movie, or to allow a remake of a personal movie to be anything but a big movie. Fans are going to hate it, but the kids will love the popcorn combos.”

Spielberg has a number of films in the works including a version of ‘Tintin’ and an Abraham Lincoln biopic starring Liam Neeson. Smith last starred in the summer blockbuster ‘Hancock’. oldboy 2

“One would hope that for the sake of genre fans this isn’t the start of a new trend,” continued Temple. “Will Robert Zemeckis remake ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ starring Tom Hanks? You also have to wonder what appeal Spielberg and Smith would see in that particular story. They are not exactly people who have been put upon in recent years. They are both minorities obviously and that might be the tact they take, but they are millionaire minorities. Do they even understand the concept of revenge anymore? Maybe they will be going after Paramount officials in the remake. It’s just difficult to see what personal connection they could have with the story."

Park’s connection to ‘Jaws’ is a little less tenuous, especially if he is allowed to proceed in the way he sees fit.

“Sharks know about life and death. We will be able to explore those themes in whole new ways,” concluded the director. “And yes I plan to have an octopus in this one as well.”

Dreamworks marketing executives are already developing merchandising tie-ins including a deal with Black & Decker for a line of hammers.
