Hollywood, CA – With the death of Estelle Getty, Sylvester Stallone has announced that he will discontinue plans for a follow up to the 1992 hit “Stop! Or my Mom will Shoot”.
“It is a very sad week for all of us,” said Stallone in a statement issued Thursday. “Estelle was a beautiful lady and very special to not only the public, but also all of us in the Stop! Or my Mom will shoot family. I had hoped to reunite with her later this year, but it appears that she will be appearing in a different sequel. We will miss Estelle and our hearts go out to her friends and family.”
Stallone had been working on the script for the film since late last year, and had secured funding through the same sources that enabled him to produce both the newest Rocky and Rambo instalments. The plan had been to shoot the film through November and December of this year for release sometime next summer.
Roger Spottiswoode, director of the first film expressed disappointment the film had been cancelled but was principally concerned for the family of the former “Golden Girl”. “We had a great time working on the original film, even if the end product didn’t turn out so well. Estelle was a beautiful person and it would have been great to work with her again, but some things are not meant to be I guess.”
When reached for comment, Getty’s representatives were at a loss for an answer “We had never heard of this project. Estelle was quite ill for a number of years and has not been able to work. I don’t know whom Stallone spoke to but it is very strange that he had made such concrete plans without securing her participation, which of course was not going to happen.”
Stallone, for his part, is already moving on. The actor/director/writer has begun a treatment for a follow up to his 1978 film F.I.S.T., in which he played a Teamster set against a corrupt Senator.
“I decided to go back and revisit that story. We feel that that type of story can have even more relevance in today’s culture. Much like I did with Rocky and Rambo I want to take that character into the modern age for a modern audience.”
Much like his plans for the Stop! sequel, Stallone hopes to reunite cast and crew for the new F.I.S.T. project, with the exception of the deceased Rod Steiger.
“Oh, he’s dead? Guess that’s why he’s not returning my calls. Maybe A ‘Nighthawks’ sequel? Is Billy Dee Williams still alive?”
