SUPERMAN TO STOP ALL CRIME EVERYWHERE

October 23 2008

New York City, NY – In an effort to boost sales for their premiere franchise, DC comics has announced that Superman will star in a new series in which he will eradicate all crime from the world. The plan is to have the Man of Steel solve all crime and apprehend all criminals and then settle into a relaxing life.dc comics logo

“The plan is that in the first five or six issues Superman will stop all crime and then settle into a normal American life. Family, barbeques, PTA meetings, etc. We want people to be able to be able to identify with him as a though he’s just one of them,” said Dan DiDio, senior Vice President and executive editor of DC. “What we learned with the success of ‘The Dark Knight’ is that people want realism. You can’t get any more real than loading the dishwasher and mowing the lawn. It’s very difficult for the average American to identify with an alien from another planet who can fly and see through walls. Those are things that are foreign to most people’s day to day lives. There aren’t a whole lot of people with heat vision out there, well maybe my wife.”

John Byrne, who is credited with resurrecting the Superman franchise in 1986, will return to pen the series. Comic legend Jeph Loeb will also pen a number of issues for the new series. Ed McGuiness will draw at least the first twenty-five issues.action comics number 1

“Everyone who reads Superman has at some point this ‘duh’ moment when you realize that this nearly invincible character who could realistically solve all crime in the course of a few days just sort of milks it,” said Byrne. “I’m determined to change people’s perception of the character. Along with the regular family stuff we will delve into his deeper psychological issues and guilts. You have to think that this guy who has essentially allowed all this crime that could have stopped would have some kind of complex. Why didn’t I stop 9/11? How many people died because I did nothing? We will dig into those issues, but the principle focus of the books will be on his day to day life. Love and life, the things all Americans understand.”

Of course one would argue that part of the appeal of Superman, and in fact the escapism that all superheroes provide, is exactly what the readers are looking for. DC understands the risks but are convinced that their new direction is the right one.

“The escapism and wish fulfillment that the comics provide is most definitely a part of the mix and we don’t want to alienate, so to speak, those readers,” continued DiDio. “Anytime you put out a new book with a radical departure from what people expect you risk angering and upsetting your loyal readers. We feel that with the talent we have behind this series fans will not be disappointed and that this change will mark a whole new era in the life of their favourite series.”

Didio also compared the new focus of the series the hit computer game series ‘The Sims’, which allows players to control the day to day lives of ordinary people. We did point out to DiDio that the title was eight years old and in a completely different medium, but he was unshaken.man with push mower

“It still sells right? That’s what we are looking for. Look, the realism of the Batman series has been the lifeblood of its success. We can see this is what people are craving. Besides, if the sales start to dip we’ll just switch it up and create some new kind of supervillain. Easy. “

DiDio also said that the new series would not intersect with the storylines of any other DC series, leaving those other superheroes with villains left to defeat. “We’re not totally stupid,” he concluded. “People still like bad guys getting the crap beaten out of them.”

The new series is expected to launch in February of next year.
