RIGHT WING ATTACKS OBAMA PLAN TO EVICT SOLDIERS FROM IRAQ
February 27 2009
Kirkuk, Iraq – Everyone knew the war in Iraq would eventually come. As the daily death toll declines and the government and law enforcement get a better hold on day to day peace, the need for a sustained American military force is becoming less and less with each passing day. While that reality is a long sought after victory for the Iraqi people who no longer have to face the daily threat of death, there are some who are disappointed and concerned for their future as President Obama officially tables a schedule for withdrawal.
A major part of his election campaign, the President has set a clear deadline for the official end of hostilities in Iraq. All but 50,000 troops will be on their way back to the United States by August 31 2010 with the remaining soldiers extending their stay until the end of 2011. The cessation of hostilities is no doubt a large victory for the young President but others are not so sure that the plan is such a good idea.
“House and Senate Republicans are already up in arms about the plan. They are going to be moving all these soldiers back into the United States without a clear plan for re-integration. All of a sudden there are going to be 100,000 new people looking for work. Where do these people go? What do they do for a living? In these rough
economic times that line of questioning is only going to become fiercer,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “And to be fair, Obama has not addressed those concerns. War makes jobs and without war there are going to be a lot of unemployed people. Sure a lot of them have families to go back to but there are a significant number of troops whose wives and husbands have cheated on them and are just waiting for their return to tell them. The way the housing market is it’s hard enough for families to afford a place to live never mind a whole new group of singles.”
Some in congress have already proposed a veteran dating service to try and match up those whose families have been destroyed by infidelity during the long overseas stay. So far the Obama administration has eschewed the idea, owing in large part to the predominance of men in the armed forces.
“Despite what many Republicans believe, homosexuality is not a choice. Sure they’ve probably had lots of time to experiment during group military showers but those just aren’t the kind of relationships and attractions that allow people to grow old together,” continued Kinsey. “People don’t just go gay unfortunately. That would make things a lot easier.”
Right wing pundits and certain Republican politicians have already begun using the withdrawal as leverage against the new administration in the hopes of undermining Obama’s support in the military, and thereby question his patriotism.
“America and the military are intertwined. If you don’t support the military then you don’t support the country and that is the argument many are already using. That pressure point is slightly undermined by Obama’s plans to increase the number of troops in
Afghanistan, but only slightly. Afghanistan isn’t Iraq and short of seeing Osama bin Laden’s corpse on CNN, the average American is never going to really care about that war they way they care about Iraq,” continued Kinsey. “It doesn’t do any good with the military itself either. Soldiers have settled into Iraq because it’s similar to the US. It has roads and buildings and running water. Afghanistan has none of that and for many of the soldiers it just seems foreign and unwelcoming and that’s the last thing you want in a warzone. Unless Iran or North Korea does something stupid and the US is forced into those areas, troop support will be a major issue in 2012.”
It is the average soldier though that has the most to lose. While politicians debate and posture soldiers are having their home away from home taken from them without so much as please.
“I keep hearing from my wife about these letters from the bank and how we may lose the house and all I can think of now is that I’m already being evicted. I don’t need to move back to Topeka to lose my house and family, President Obama is taking all that away from me,” said Corporal William Hangstough of Topeka, Kansas, currently stationed in Kirkuk. “Where’s my stimulus package? I didn’t learn to use guns and grenades so that I could work in factory I learned to use them so I could kill people and I just can’t do that in Kansas, or at least I couldn’t when I left. Where’s my stimulus Mr. President? Why are you evicting me?”
Some in the military are reportedly pushing for a further decline in the economy which would theoretically make their skills in killing a much more sought after commodity in an economically depressed America. No word yet if the President is interested in pursuing that course of action.
