SUDANESE KIDNAPPERS BOOTED FROM TERRORIST NETWORK AFTER LAME KIDNAPPING
March 15 2009
Khartoum, Sudan – The release of three foreign aid workers on Saturday is being hailed as a victory for the nascent Sudanese government who secured the release after only three days. The kidnapping came after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for new President Omar el-Beshir after his decision to expel foreign aid workers. The kidnappers reportedly grabbed the three members of Doctors without Borders to protest that warrant, ignoring the basics of irony, and only held onto them for three days prompting their expulsion from the international terrorist brotherhood.
“Yes, they have been released, they are in good condition,” said Ali Yousif, director of protocol for the Sudanese Foreign Ministry. “They will be transported to Khartoum today or tomorrow.”
The Belgian branch of Doctors without Borders is now planning a withdrawal from the region despite the severe need in the area. The three workers, from Italy, France, and Canada, are reportedly all unharmed and mildly amused at the kidnapper’s efforts.
“They said they released them for the country's sake and they kidnapped them for the sake of the country,” said Governor Osman Kebir of the kidnappers. “No ransom was paid to the group for the release.”
Calling themselves the Eagles of al-Bashir, it is not clear what exactly the intentions or demands of the group were or how long they have been on the international terrorist scene but it is expected that they will disappear almost as quickly as they have come on the scene. It’s also not clear if they have some kind of connection with the equally indie music group ‘Eagles of Death Metal’.
“In regions like Sudan where there’s consistent instability the occurrences of kidnapping are on the increase, as are the development of new terrorist organizations. This could have been a major coup for the small indie terrorist organizations but they seem to have come into it without a clear vision or plan in mind and that more or less destroyed their efforts,” said Scrape TV Terrorism analyst Doug Davids. “You have to
take your shots when they arise but you have to be ready to follow through as well. Not having a cohesive agenda is one thing, but they let them go after three days in captivity just reeks of amateurish behaviour. There are organizations that work for years to get to the point of kidnapping international workers who could have really made a go of it, and these rookies luck into a goldmine and waste the chance. They are going to be on the outs for good I think. Terrorists aren’t known for being forgiving.”
‘Eagles of Death Metal’ is an American independent band who has flirted with the public spotlight largely due to the success of one of their founders, Josh Homme and his other band ‘Queens of the Stone Age’. The experience of Homme is expected to be an asset should the band ever break into the mainstream.
“Experience can be a valuable asset in this realm. So can instinct and talent and it appears as though the Eagles of al-Bashir have none of those qualities in abundance. Not only does this incident raise a lot of ire in the international terrorist community because of the wasted opportunity, it casts a dark shadow across all kidnapping efforts,” continued
Davids. “When you reach the heights of international success, whether in music or in terrorism, you become a representative for the field and have to act accordingly. It’s going to be hard for anyone to be taken seriously after this. All those years of ransom videos and beheadings have gone to waste because of the buffoonery of a group of rookies. Decapitations don’t just happen by themselves, they take effort, and I think the EaB are going to have watch their own heads for a while. Many are completely frustrated with the overall African effort.”
Doctors without Borders is reportedly pulling out from the area after the kidnapping, despite the desperate need. The pull out is thought to be only partly due to the experience and partly due to wussyness.
