TENSION RISES AS NORTH KOREA REFUSES TO CALL SOUTH
March 10 2009
Seoul, South Korea – In a series of some of the most aggressive manoeuvres by the North, U.S. and South Korean military forces have been put on high alert. Receding from reconciliation talks Pyongyang as reportedly alerted its million man army to their highest level of alert and, perhaps most provocatively and upsetting to the South, has cut off phone communication.
The North has been under a watchful eye of late after a series of training exercises last week and with an the impending launch of a communications satellite which many observers have seen as a mask for a long range missile test. Pyongyang has warned that any attack against their launch would result in a counterstrike and would amount to an act of war. Those threats, nothing new from the North, carried little weight until they decided to stop calling.
“We will retaliate (over) any act of intercepting our satellite for peaceful purposes with prompt counterstrikes by the most powerful military means,” said a spokesman for the General Staff of the Korean People's Army. “Shooting our satellite for peaceful purposes will precisely mean a war.”
Now with communication halted between the two Republics, as well as the massing of one of world’s largest and most sophisticated armies along the border, the possibility of war seems more real than it has in decades and that has many concerned about the very nature of telephone communication.
“This could be a major blow to the telecommunications industry. This isn’t quite the same thing as some high school girl refusing to return a boy’s call, largely because one side has nuclear weapons, and could pose a serious setback for communications in the region,” said Scrape TV International
analyst Gustav Hander. “They had been getting along so well and that’s why this sudden abrupt change is so shocking. It is ironic that this dispute is centered around a communications satellite, but perhaps that’s sad statement of this whole conflict. This of course does nothing for the traditional communications industry which has been suffering heavy blows as the result of things like text messaging and email.”
After decades of tensions, tempers had begun to abate in recent years between the two former friends. Late night conversations deep into the morning were common between the two, and the recent occasions for them to be seen together in public had been cause for celebration.
“The North has fallen back into its old habits and it appears spend all of its time with its old friends. It’s really a shame because these two could really work well together and while one is
sitting there ready, the other just keeps coming forward then backing away again,” continued Hander. “All that ends up happening is heartbreak on both ends, and of course the risk of full scale war and the death of millions. This lack of phone calls is truly a bad sign.”
It is widely speculated that the North has bowed to pressure from its old relationship, China, as well as being burdened by deep psychological issues stemming from their leadership. The South meanwhile, looking primarily for a healthy relationship, is reportedly waiting by the telephone, jumping in anticipation whenever it rings.
“It’s a sad thing really but you have two very damaged parties here and they seem to keep doing themselves in further. The North has some deep attachment issues and really can’t seem to think of anyone but themselves. They tend to focus on making themselves into something rather than just being themselves,” said Scrape TV Psychology analyst Dr. Sarah Welp. “The South meanwhile seems to be holding onto this perception of the North that isn’t really accurate. They are holding them up to standards that are completely of their own making and when they fall short of that, are massively disappointed. The
problem there though isn’t with the North and their failure it’s with the South and
their misplaced faith. They want them to be something they are not and that just causes tension in the relationship. It’s ironic, but their overly good will interacts with the other’s insecurities and forces a wider and wider wedge between them. I would recommend that the South move on, but try and be a little less needy. If the North does come around they will have to do it in their own time. Don’t wait by the phone.”
Reports indicate that the South is still holding a flame for the North, which of course would likely be wiped out with the shockwave from a nuclear blast. They have also reportedly kept the same phone number just in case.
