NETANYAHU MAKES PLANS TO SUMMER IN NEW PALESTINIAN STATE
June 14 2009
Jerusalem, Israel – From the beginning the establishment of the modern state of Israel has been embroiled in conflict. From the earliest settlements by Jewish migrants in the late 19th century through to the modern day intifadas, there are few conflicts in human history that have matched the passion and violence that has so defined the
existence of a single state. Through the generations of violence and conflict there has always been a hope and a dream of some kind of lasting peace, a vision that has thus far eluded the people of the region.
It is that hope that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has revitalized with a sudden about turn in his formerly harsh stance towards his Palestinian neighbours by declaring his support for statehood, something very few people expected from the hardliner. Though the Prime Minister’s support is contingent on certain conditions, early reports indicate that his shift in position may be motivated more by personal appetites than a desire for peace between the two warring parties.
“I call on you, our Palestinian neighbours, and to the leadership of the Palestinian Authority: Let us begin peace negotiations immediately, without preconditions. Israel is committed to international agreements and expects all the other parties to fulfill their obligations as well,” said Netanyahu. “If we get this guarantee for demilitarization and necessary security arrangements for Israel, and if the Palestinians recognize Israel as the state of the Jewish people, we will be willing in a real peace agreement to reach a solution of a demilitarized Palestinian state alongside the Jewish state.”
Though his call negotiations without preconditions with simultaneous preconditions being placed on the talks appears to be contradictory, many believe that is a part of early negotiations that would help ensure a better price for prime real estate in the new version of Palestine.
“This battle has more than anything been about land. One group takes land from another, they fight a little bit, the borders shift slightly and then the whole thing
starts all over again. From the start this has been about land and territory and that doesn’t appear to have changed in this latest declaration, though it does mark the first time that a sitting Israel Prime Minister has used decades of conflict to justify a summer vacation,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “It would be naive to say that the entire conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians is due to beach space but we can see now that it at least plays a part in the motivations by both sides. True the area has thousands of years of history and innumerable religious and cultural artifacts that date back to the beginning of human civilization, but it also has some killer beaches
that are understandably much sought after by Jew and Muslim alike. White sand, crystal clear water, these are things that transcend religion and ethnicity and borders and have likely been at the root of all of this conflict.”
Though it is not believed that Netanyahu’s personal vacation spot will be an official part of the negotiations to establish a Palestinian state, he has reportedly already begun talks with real estate agents in the Gaza Strip in anticipation of successful statehood.
“Outside the desperate poverty and general hopelessness that exists in the Gaza Strip, it’s actually a very nice place to visit. In between rocket attacks and people
scrounging for food, there’s a lot of natural beauty and it make perfect sense that the Prime Minister would want to summer there. Who knows, he may even end up retiring to some beautiful villa overlooking the Mediterranean,” continued Gershwin. “I’m sure it vexes him to have to negotiate the West Bank and Jerusalem issues as well but sometimes you have to make sacrifices to get what you want. Sure he’s going to have to handle the hardliners and reassure the people of Israel that this is the right thing to do, but all that effort will be worth it when he’s kicking back on a beach with a Sachlav Cham in hand, feeling the early morning mist of the Mediterranean on his forehead. This was the right move all around.”
The Palestinian real estate market has been in flux since the global economic crisis took hold leaving a lot of properties throughout the Gaza Strip a steal.
