FRANCE TRIES TO CALM CONCERNS ABOUT DESIGNER NUCLEAR REACTORS
November 7 2009
Paris, France – France has long been the centre of the fashion world and because of that has fought hard to maintain that reputation. In that effort the country has made fashion one of its primary exports, adding flourish to virtually every national and
international venture. Sometimes that flourish comes with acclaim, sometimes with confusion, nut now the county’s latest venture has brought both of those things as well as a great deal of safety concerns.
At issue is a series of new nuclear reactors, two currently being built in Finland and France, and a bid to build up to six in the United Arab Emirates. The reactors, the world’s first third generation systems, have brought a great deal of excitement as well as great deal of concern with many of the bidders worried that the new design might be a little much. That has prompted the French government to step into the negotiations on behalf of the manufacturers, Areva and EDF, to help assuage concerns that the reactors might be a little too new. Though safety is cited as the primary concern with the un-field tested reactors, the appearance of the systems is also causing a great deal of issues in the conservative Middle East.
“We understand the concerns of the bidders and we want to do everything we can to put their minds at ease. There have been issues in the past with Areva and EDF in respect to safety concerns but that has been investigated and resolved to the complete satisfaction of the French Government,” said a spokesperson for President Sarkozy. “We do not want the flourish that we are presenting with these new reactors to inhibit adoption. Internally, these systems are the most advanced and safest on the planet. Yes they do look a little different but that should not raise concerns as to what is going on internally. The French have had a long history in the nuclear field as well as the design field. I can assure everyone that we have not sacrificed performance for design and never will.”
The reactors will be available in a number of different colours, but the standard grey will not be amongst those available, something which is causing much of the trepidation amongst new buyers who have come to expect certain things.
“Anytime there is a radical change to design people get a little sceptical. Nuclear reactors have been grey for so long that people simply expect that is the colour they will be and when something new comes along, well they get a little hesitant, thinking perhaps that company behind it isn’t the original. That’s why companies like Coke have never really changed their design scheme much, that’s what people expect and it keeps them coming back,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “I mean obviously the French are very progressive in a lot of ways and they have no trouble playing around with things but getting people to accept change can be difficult, even in the Emirates which obviously have been very forward thinking in recent years. This will be a test as to whether or not they’ve pushed too far.”
Other additions include a diamond encrusted containment vessel and a spherical fuel assembly.
“There’s little doubt that from a creative standpoint the French are outstripping competitors, especially the U.S. and South Korean bids which are really more or less the same thing we are used to, but that won’t mean a sale. True they are building them in France, but that hardly counts, and Finland only kind of counts because, well, it’s Finland, and they aren’t going to make it big with just those two buyers,” continued Green. “The one advantage they have is that people do expect progressive behaviour from France and that will go a long way in adding credibility that they wouldn’t otherwise have. It will likely change things if this sale is successful so we will just have to wait and see.”
The French government also reassured the bidders that any safety issues are unrelated to the cosmetic changes.
