Mumbai, India – Terrorists have launched a series of brazen attacks in the second largest city in India. Dozens have been killed and hundreds injured, and America is taking it badly.
The attacks targeted ten popular hotels and other locations around the financial and cultural centre of the country, all in an apparently well co-ordinated set of attacks. While there are reports of some of the attacks targeting British and American visitors, there is no confirmation that any of the dead are foreigners. Nonetheless media and governments from the west, the United States in particular, have claimed the attacks as an assault against themselves.
From CNN to Fox News, American news organizations have jumped on the story and made every effort they can to connect the attacks to Al Qaeda without any real information.
“While it’s true that an organization has claimed responsibility, but the attacks were so well organized that it has to be Al Qaeda. The attacks themselves are unlike anything they have done before, and that organization has never shown to be active in India before, but that doesn’t really mean anything. It has to be Al Qaeda,” said Terrorism expert Edward Gaff. “While as yet we have nothing to really go on, the reality is Al Qaeda is this multi headed hydra that has feelers all over the world. Whenever anything bad happens it has to be related to Al Qaeda. They are really bad guys.”
India with the second largest population in the world has long struggled with terrorism long before the September 11th attacks and Al Qaeda. From internal strife, to battles with Pakistan and Kashmir, the world’s largest democracy has had a robust history of bombings, shootings, and kidnappings. Still, this latest attack is seen as a major surprise, largely because there is little else going on in the world.
“Look, if there were pressing domestic issues this wouldn’t be as much of a story, but the reality is the news cycle is really soft, but that’s a good thing. It gives us an opportunity to remind the American people that they are under threat and that we still haven’t caught the bad guys,” said a spokesperson for CNN, who has been running around the clock coverage on the attacks. “Al Qaeda, Al Qaeda, Al Qaeda. It’s all about them and it’s all about the American people. We need to be aware, we need to be concerned.”
There is no evidence that these attacks are related in any way to the United States, nor that the attacks could extend into the United States.
“This is India’s 9/11,” said a CNN analyst. “This is one of the most profound happenings in the history of the world and people need to be aware that Osama bin Laden is out there planning. Be alert, watch for suspicious packages. Check your backyards. Call the police if you see anything suspicious. They are everywhere.”
Of course some are bringing a more rational approach to the attacks, seeing it as more an extension of domestic issues afflicting India rather than a world stopping event.
“There’s a lot of violence in India. It’s a country of a billion and half people so there are going to be outbursts every now and then,” said Scrape TV Terrorism analyst Doug Davids. “It’s entirely possible that there is a tenuous connection to Al Qaeda but not only is there no evidence to support that, it is likely only a tangential affiliation. One group knows another group, which knows another group. There is this impression that Bin Laden is the head of some global terrorist military, but there is no evidence to support that. Remember, all these small groups have leaders who want to be the next bin Laden. These guys are terrorists after all. It’s not like there’s ever been a great deal of honour amongst thieves.”
