CANADIAN POLITICIANS ESCHEW DEMOCRACY IN FAVOUR OF WINNING

December 4 2008

Ottawa, Canada – With the newly re-elected Conservative government less than two months old, Canadians be already be looking at new leadership. Should the conservative government collapse Stephen Harper would rank as the having the second shortest run for a democratically elected government, being bested only by US president William Henry Harrison died 30 days after taking office. While Harper may have no intention of dying anytime soon, it may not be long before he wished he had.stephen harper canadian flag

“Essentially the problem is that the Conservative party has begun trying to enact policy as though they had a majority government, which they do not. That has caused a whole scale revolt by the parties who lost,” said Scrape TV political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “The opposing parties are arguing that the conservatives have done little to fight the economic crisis, and have made moves to limit the funding afforded to other parties. The coalition of left wing parties seeks to overtake the government and install themselves in their place.”

Harper’s government received just under 38 per cent of the popular vote in the previous election, which was dwarfed by combined votes given to the left leaning Liberal, New Democratic, Bloc Québécois, and Green Party. There is no other right wing party with a significant number of votes which effectively caused a split in the vote, pushing the conservatives into power.stephane dion pointing

“Harper saw that they won a few more seats than in the last election and somehow took that as a mandate from the Canadian people, despite that fact that the bulk of the vote went to the left, and began to bully people,” continued Kinsey. “That doesn’t change the fact that however it came about the Canadian people voted the Conservatives into power and now they are effectively in the midst of a Coup, a sanctioned and legal Coup, but a coup nonetheless. It’s not often you see that in first world democracies.”

It was announced today that Governor-General Michaëlle Jean, the Queen’s representative in Canada, agreed to suspend parliament giving the Conservatives a reprieve until at least the end of January when the coalition will likely call for a vote of no confidence and install themselves as the new government. Stéphane Dion, leader of the Liberal party and butt of many jokes, will likely be the new prime Minister should the Coup be successful.vladimir lenin

“While Dion is not exactly Vladimir Lenin or Che Guevara you have to at least applaud his never say die attitude. He hasn’t allowed the fact that the Liberal’s actually lost seats in the last election while under his charge, or that the handful of Canadians who even know who he is make fun of him to his face, to hinder his ambition,” said Canadian political historian John Wilkes. “You have to appreciate that kind of determination, to just throw common sense and the will of the people out the window in favour of what you want. I mean if a government isn’t the personal playground of a politician than what good is it. That’s one lesson the Bush administration has shown the world. If the bastion of democracy can ignore such principles as legality and responsibility then the rest of the world has little choice but to follow suit. I say good for Dion, Lord knows he was never going to be Prime Minister by the will of the people.”

An unforeseen consequence of the Canadian crisis may very well be the installation of democracies in countries presently ruled either by dictatorships or monarchies.revolution

“We are starting to hear rumblings out of places like Myanmar and Saudi Arabia. It’s very appealing to be able to put on the face of democracy but still run things however you see fit,” continued Wilkes. “Russia has been the leader in this in recent months, but having a true parliamentary democracy throw aside the very tenants of the system could spark a worldwide push on Canadian-style democracy, or whatever it is this has become.”

The revolution continues in January.
