CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER HARPER SET FOR EPIC ELECTION FAIL

Ottawa, Canada – When Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper dissolved parliament and called for an election the plan was to try and secure a majority government. Leading in the national polls and enjoying heretofore unheard of popularity, the time seemed right to make a strike. Now, with the actual election only days away, polls indicate that only will Harper’s government not gain a majority, there is a strong possibility that they may lose office all together, setting them  up for the fail hall of fame.

The Canadian government is run on a parliamentary system. People vote for members of parliament and the party with the majority of those votes is elected into office. The leader of that party is Prime Minister. A majority government is accomplished when the majority of Members of Parliament in the House of Commons are of a particular party. Majority governments have an easier time pushing through bills and other legislation. Very few minority governments last an entire term of office.

“Harper probably made a good move at the time. The economy was fine and the Republicans were doing well in the United States, but since the drop in the economy, well things have changed,” said Scrape TV political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “They seemed to follow the American’s like they usually do and the pattern has followed along the same path. Canada is so intertwined with the US that even when politicians fail it crosses the border. As the right wing has crumbled in the States, so it has in Canada as well. It says a lot for the relationship between the two countries”

Indeed, Harper called for the election September 7, just as the American public was agog over Republican Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The attention on the Republicans was ubiquitous and many feel that the Conservative politicians on the northern side of the border felt that the tide was turning, that the right was taking over. But much as the support for the American conservatives has dwindled, so has the support in Canada. The Liberal party led by Stephane Dion has been steadily gaining support across the country.

“It has long been a criticism of conservative politicians in Canada that they cosy up a little too much to the Americans. It’s entirely possible that Harper felt Sarah Palin would somehow help him win the election, after all Ottawa is closer to Alaska than Washington,” continued Kinsey. “It may be a little late now, but maybe in two years when they have another election they should ask Palin to run. She’s a hockey mom, she’s almost Canadian. Either way, the election isn’t looking good for Harper. They will likely scrape out a win but the hopes of a majority look to be long gone. They chose the exact worst moment to make their move and this may go down in history as one of the biggest upsets in particular history. Or it would if anyone cared about Canadian politics.”

The current Canadian election is set for October 14. The next will likely be two years from now.

“Expect the next government to be Liberal,” concluded Kinsey. “At least it will be if Obama and Biden win in the States. At least Palin will be available.”
