Barcelona, Spain – Even rudimentary physics knowledge would lead most people to believe that the more you dig, the deeper a hole will get. That is something a local Barcelona man had to experience to truly understand.
Alfonso Ordonez, a Barcelona based contractor, had finally relented to his wife’s request to build a new fence in the backyard. A project that would seem to be a reasonably small project for an experienced contractor has turned into a total nightmare.
“I’m not quite sure how this happened,” shouted Ordonez from what is now a twenty-two foot deep hole. “I began digging for the fence posts and I just kind of got into a rhythm. The dirt just came away so easily, I guess I kind of got carried away.”
His situation has become the focus not only of the neighbourhood and rescue personnel but also of the local media, prompting a great deal of embarrassment for Isabelle Ordonez and their three young children.
“Alfonso is always getting himself into situations like these,” she said through an interpreter. “I mean not literally like this, but he’s always making a bad situation worse. He just doesn’t know when to quit.”
The Ordonez home has become the talk of the city and has even brought an economic boon to this small suburb. Neighbours have been charging media for bathroom access and refreshments as this drama extends into its fourth day.
Rescue personnel have been on site from the beginning of the situation but have been at a loss as to what to do. One fireman spoke on the condition of anonymity; “We keep asking him, but he keeps saying he doesn’t want help. It would be a simple thing really, but he’s convinced that if he keeps digging he’ll eventually find a way out. Really, the guy’s kind of an idiot, but hey, we’re getting overtime, so let him keep digging.”
One local reporter uncovered a possible motive behind his refusal to accept help; Economic.
According to the report the Ordonez family has been swimming in debt for a quite a while. “Alfonso always just spends and spends. He seems to think that he can spend his way out of his money problems,” said an anonymous friend.
One person though doesn’t believe this is the case, ex-wife Elisabeth Sarsola. “Alfonso is not smart enough to figure something like that out. I think he’s put himself into this situation and he is just too stubborn to admit he is wrong. There’s a reason we’re divorced.”
Whatever the motivation, it seems the situation won’t be solved anytime soon. “I’m going to make it out of here,” Ordonez shouted. “I got myself into this and I’m going to get myself out of it no matter how long it takes.”
His wife for one is standing by him. “I love him. It’s important that he solves these kinds of things for himself. I hope it works out soon though because we still need that fence, and after that he’s got to paint the living room floor.”
