Tel Aviv, Israel – Israeli has announced a unilateral cease fire to end the three week incursion that has left 1200 people dead and scores more injured. Operations in the territory began on December 27 after more than 500 rockets were launched into Israel following the end of a previous ceasefire. Israel announced that it had achieved its objectives in the territory, just in time for the inauguration of the new US President.
“There’s little doubt Israel has conducted a major operation in the territory and done significant damage to Hamas infrastructure, at least for the time being. The continuing story here is ceasefire, rearm, conflict, then the whole cycle starts again. That may change with President Obama, but we will see,” said Scrape TV Middle East analyst David Gershwin. “Obama has already taken a slightly more aggressive stand in respect to dealing with Israel. While it’s unlikely there will be significant policy changes both sides need to feel the new guy out. Without US support it’s difficult for either side to conduct business as usual. Getting this conflict in before the deadline was a good move and allows them to hit their year quad-annual budget.”
The quad-annual budget is determined by the incoming President. Generally both Palestinian and Israel forces look to spend the remainder of monies allocated to them by the previous US President in order to justify future budget requests.
“Obama has already said that he won’t be giving Israel a blank cheque, but every President says that before taking office. The lobby in Washington combined with the very practical need to control Middle East oil supplies means that there will always be an open account for Israel,” continued Gershwin. “Money for re-armament will also be allocated in the form of AID into the Palestinian territories and the two sides will be able to continue business as usual. Obama is new so he will want to show the world an earnest face but everyone knows the money will keep flowing. They just need to give him a little room to establish himself.”
The day after Israel announced their ceasefire Hamas followed with one of their own. The militant organization has given the Israelis one week move their forces out of the Gaza strip. Despite the very lopsided death toll—of the 1200 killed only twelve were Israeli, four as a result of friendly fire—Hamas officials are declaring victory in the region.
“We in the Palestinian resistance movements announce a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip,” Moussa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas. “And we demand that Israeli forces withdraw in one week and that they open all the border crossings to permit the entry of humanitarian aid and basic goods for our people in Gaza.”
Israeli forces have not acknowledged the opposing ceasefire though they have begun moving troops from inside the Gaza borders.
“It’s very gracious of Hamas to give the Israelis a break after all they have gone through, especially after they had already begun to pull out. It’s clear the Israelis with such superior fire power, training, and money were significantly outmatched and it speaks well of Hamas that they are giving them a break,” continued Gershwin. “Let’s just hope that these duelling ceasefires don’t become an issue of contention that sparks a wider conflict
throughout the region. Both sides are declaring victory and that could become an issue between the two. It doesn’t take a whole lot for these two sides to get worked up. Of course while Obama is transition in conflict is unlikely so everyone is probably safe for a little while.”
Iranian officials have also put their two cents into the conflict and ceasefire but no one has paid attention.
“In a couple months we’ll see fighting again, give it to March or April before we see tanks rolling and mothers crying. By then they’ll have fresh American dollars to spend and another four years of peace of mind and killing each other.”
