MADELEINE MCCANN RENEWS CALL FOR HELP FINDING PARENTS

Lisbon, Portugal – After a year and a half absence, young Madeleine McCann is renewing calls to have her missing parents returned to her safe and sound. Madeleine has been separated from her parents since May 7 2007 after wandering away from a resort hotel in the Algarve region of Portugal. Since that time, despite a massive worldwide manhunt, Madeleine has not been able to reconnect with her parents.

“Madeleine is calling on the world media who has been so gracious in their attempts to reunite the family to once again make an effort to bring her and her parents together once again,” said a spokesperson for the five year old. “She desperately misses her parents and her brother and sister and would like to see them again. We are also asking for help from both the Portuguese and British authorities in helping to reunite the family once and for all.”

The McCann family became the centre of worldwide attention last year when it was discovered that Madeleine had vanished from the seaside villa after being left alone with her two younger siblings while her parents dined. The initial search for Madeleine was as much a focus of attention as the missing girl herself, plagued by bungling and missteps. While speculation ranged from an abduction by a pedophile network to a murder by the parents themselves, recent efforts have focused less on the circumstances of the absence and more on the reasons leading up to it.

“Unfortunately, as we all know, the family unit is much different than it ever has been in the past. Divorces; Working parents; Media influence; all these things contribute to a different life than many of us grew up in,” said Scrape TV Family Values analyst Marge Hendricks. “It’s very difficult to gauge the type of effect that can have on the developing psyche of a young person. Pressure is put on the parents and on the children and that can have all types of unintended consequences. This is a problem across the western world that is likely to only get worse. What’s important is that we talk and engage each other. Communication is the key to any healthy relationship.”

Of course the McCann family aren’t the only ones that have invested countless hours into solving the separation. Scores of volunteers and officials have dedicated thousands of man hours into resolving what some see as an internal family issue. The case has also put new focus on the need for families to play a more active role in their own lives rather than allowing government agencies to intervene.

“This is the fundamental issue, not only in Britain but in most of the modern world. People use surrogates to parent, whether it be with television or videogames or babysitters. People have put the happiness of their families into the hands of others and inevitably it will lead to these types of disassociations,” continued Hendricks. “This type of behaviour will only lead to more and more of these types of break ups and the last thing we need is for more outsiders to be involved. To say nothing for the amount of man hours and money that has been dedicated to a case that really has little relevance to outsiders with the exception of pulling on the heartstrings a little. These types of issues need to be solved before they happen, and if that cannot happen than the families need to take it unto themselves to resolve it without wasting taxpayer’s resources. Not on is that a waste, it does not solve the underlying issue.”

As yet, the McCann family has made no response to the request from their daughter.
