MISSILE DEFENSE PLAN CAUSES GERMANS TO POUR OVER POLISH BORDER

Warsaw, Poland – The announcement last week of the plan for the United States to install ten interceptor missiles in Poland has caused tense nerves throughout the region. Russia in particular has been rattling its sabres, fearing that this is the first step in a new version of the cold war; The Ukraine has begun a petition to allow a similar system in its borders; and rather unexpectedly, German tourists have begun pouring over the Polish border, bringing back very potent memories for the Polish people.
Neither Polish nor German officials have any explanation for the sudden bump in tourism that began shortly before the announcement but both sides are not reading a whole lot into the anomaly.
“The German people are an adventurous people and we have a great deal of tourism both into and out of the country,” said German Minister of the Interior Wolfgang Schäuble. “Nothing should be read into this. Poland is a beautiful country and we are happy to occupy it.” It should be noted that an official clarified that the minister meant ‘visit’ not ‘occupy’ and the mistake was a translation issue.
Polish officials are also putting on a brave face, dismissing the surge as happenstance and welcoming the tourists.
“We welcome visitors from every country, no matter where in the world. The Germans are great friends of the Polish people and we should not allow things that have happened in the past to affect our judgement of things today,” said Polish Minister of Sport and Tourism Mirosław Drzewiecki. “The days of mistrust are long behind us and we must welcome to world, at least on a temporary basis. We are sure the Germans are no longer a threat. This is merely tourism.”
The government’s assertions aside, local residents are not as confident that the sudden surge is innocent. Residents throughout Warsaw have expressed serious concern and stories have started to dominate the front pages of Polish newspapers have begun publishing.
‘Fakt’, the country’s largest publication, has splashed titles such as ‘German Invasion’ and ‘At it again’ and even going so far as to publish a swastika on the front page. The tabloid newspaper’s editor makes no apologies for the issues.
“The Germans are invading. Our people must know. They see us solidifying power by partnering with the United States and they are coming after us again. The people must know and they must be stopped,” said Grzegorz Jankowski. “This is the first wave. Spies. They must be stopped now.”
Officially the German government has had no statement on the deployment of U.S. missiles in Poland, nor have they expressed any sentiment similar to those that spread throughout the country in the 1930s.
“Does Chancellor Merkel strike you as a dictator?” continued Wolfgang Schäuble. “Those days are long behind us. We are not goose stepping down streets anymore. Those days are long left behind us.”
It should be noted that Schäuble has a vacation in the spa town of Karpacz planned for late August.
