Bucharest, Romania – A decision by Romanian officials to exclude the theory of evolution from the standard school curriculum has brought the scorn from the bulk of the western world. While evolution will still be referenced passively in such subjects as biology, fundamentalist biblical teachings -- such as the notion that God created the world in seven days – will still be taught in the nation’s schools. While some are seeing the move as a dangerous slip towards radical conservatism, others see it as the inevitable fate for the eastern European nation.
“In 2006 officials banned Voltaire, Camus, and Nietzsche from philosophy courses, writers who are required reading in most other countries so it’s inevitable that something like this could come to pass,” said Anghel Buscan, a writer and critic of the Romanian government. “I realize that we were under Soviet rule for many years and that put us behind the rest of the world in a lot of ways but that is no reason to embrace that handicap. I mean we are a part of the European Union, we’ve been accepted into the modern world and we should embrace at least the fundamentals of education that the rest of the civilized world enjoys.”
Government officials though are unfazed by the criticism, determined to implement the new policies which also includes cutting biology classes from two hours to one once a week.
“This subject can be found implicitly from middle school to high-school,” said Minister of Education Cristian Adomnitei. “Do you think that the studies about the world where we live, its evolution or genetics can ignore the evolution theory? This is impossible.”
The government offered no reason for the eradication of evolution, simply stating that teachers, students, and parents need to have faith that they are acting in the best interests of everyone. The move though has also brought criticism from EU officials, some of whom were hesitant to accept the country into the organization in the first place.
“Bucharest is a beautiful city but outside that there isn’t a whole lot going on in the country,” said an EU official who preferred to remain anonymous. “Some places in that country you feel like they are going to pull out stone tools and jump at the appearance of fire and it appears the government is completely content with that. Of course with Stalin and Ceauşescu generations of people have grown up realizing the benefits that keeping people dumb can have, especially if you want to act with little or no criticism. I really hope we reassess their membership if they keep this kind of thing up.”
The government of Romania has already come under significant fire for corruption and abuse of power issues. President Traian Băsescu narrowly avoided an impeachment in 2007 and has been involved in a number of scandals including racial slurs and intimidating political opponents. This newest move is being bundled, fairly or unfairly, into the same package.
“Being a part of the greater global community does not mean an immediate switch towards sophistication, logic, or reason obviously,” continued the official. “Governments should endeavour to make the lives of their people better; to educate their students on both religious topics and globally accepted scientific principles. This move by the Băsescu government does nothing to further the cause of the Romanian people and only accomplishes undermining their level of education and therefore future participation in the global economy. You do the future no good by keeping the children of today in the dark. In order for them to be a significant contributor to the EU and the world at large they must give their students all the tools to succeed, and I’m not talking about wood clubs and stone hammers.”
In a related story, rural schools in parts of the country have begun courses dealing vampires and Count Dracula as a part of the history curriculum.
