SOCIALISTS SPEND MOST TIME ON SOCIAL WEBSITES: STUDY

Feb 4 2008

Moscow, Russia – It is no secret that social networking websites have exploded in the last few years. Myspace and Facebook are the newest, and most successful, flag bearers of this increasingly pervasive phenomenon taking over computer screens across the world. Taken out of the murky realm of classified ads and social mixers, the networking craze is fundamentally altering the way in which people communicate with one another, much in the same way the internet itself has done.

But the rise of networking has also fused with that of personal expression. The “wiki” philosophy has enriched the depth of conversation we are able to have. The new social sites allow users to upload their personal pictures, share music tastes, and even write in-depth dialogues communicating their innermost thoughts and share all this with whomever they meet online.

hammer and sickleIt’s a kind of personal expression that has never really existed at any time in history. But it isn’t just housewives and high school kids spending time on these sites. More and more business and political movements have gotten in on the act to spread their messages. A recent poll suggests that these two areas are the largest growth sectors in this field. One movement in particular seems to have been spending the most time networking their message.

Modern Socialism began in the late 19th century, principally under the stewardship of Karl Marx. Since that time it has endured a long and very controversial life. From the USSR, to Cuba, to China, the ideologies built around the socialist philosophy have been storied. Now, that philosophy has found a new outlet.

“It is crucial for us,” says Andrey Ivanov of the Moscow Socialist Network. “We must do whatever we can to spread our word. The internet is a terrific tool for that. Networking sites allow us to clarify our views to a mass audience. We will use all the resources of the internet to spread our message if need be.”

The online poll, conducted over the course of six months, has come under fire. Accusations of virtual “ballot box stuffing”, that certain parties with a vested interest in exposure have deliberately falsified results.

“Any accusation against us is slanderous,” stated Hermann Goedrich of the Berlin Peoples Network. “There are all types that may stoop to such levels, but not us. We do believe that it is important to consume as many of these resources as we can in order to spread our message, but we will do that honestly, unlike many of our competitors.” When asked if he was alluding to the MSN, he offered a terse “no comment”.myspace logo

Ivanov also spoke against the accusation, “It is fundamental to us to spread our message as widely as possible. If that means taking over every website and poll in the world, we will do that, but we will do it honestly.” He also responded to the accusation from Goedrich, “That is complete nonsense. They feel they are the only honest group amongst us. We will show them a true battle of honesty. We will also show them how to truly socialize.”

It appears that the battle over socialist ideologies, as well as the battle over the internet itself, is far from over.
