Harrisburg, PA – Pennsylvania has been one of the historical and economic centres of the United States since its original founding as one of the thirteen colonies. Home to the steel city of Pittsburgh, and the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, this north eastern state was also the seat of American independence.
Transylvania, the largest and most diverse region of Romania, bound by history ranging from the Roman Empire, to the Austria-Hungarian rulers, the region has long been a sought after territory and become immortalized in fiction.
These two places, separated by vast global distances, seem to have little in common, save a similar name. It’s that seemingly small similarity that has brought these two areas together in a recent controversy.
A small group of foreign visitors recently arrived at the Philadelphia International Airport and received the shock of their lives.
“We feel as though we’ve been deceived,” said Giuseppe Donato, leader of the group. “We came here on good faith, put our money on the line, and we are not where we should be.”
The controversy arises from an online ad posted on behalf of the World Vampire Alliance promoting a bicentennial worldwide meeting in Romania. Donato’s group had signed up with a local agency to get them to the meeting, only to find a change in the plans.
“We realized after a few hours on the plane that it was taking a long time, and everyone spoke English,” said Donato. “it was only by the time we were crossing the Atlantic that we realized something was really wrong. One of our members had not brought his jar of Earth and started to panic.”
The group’s flight originated in Austria, which was part of the confusion.
Donato explained, “I do not speak German, I’ve tried over the last hundred years or so, but have never gotten the hang of it. That’s not the whole issue though, we never should have been signed up for this flight in the first place. We were brought in under false pretences, forced to pay extra, and now we will miss the conference. I’m sure America is a wonderful place, but it is not where we are meant to be.”
The travel agency the group had signed with, based out of Switzerland, has not responded to our phone calls. As for the group, they appear to be stuck at the moment.
“We have no money to go home right now, and it has been very difficult contacting any of our friends as they are all at the conference. I have heard there is a very supportive community in the United States, hopefully we will be able to fine friends here. First though, we need to find something to eat. That was a really long flight.”
