Guildford, England – Sony has announced that the upcoming PS3 exclusive ‘Little Big Planet’ will feature exclusive PS3 exclusive downloadable content when the title release this fall. The highly anticipated title, which has been on the lips of gamers since its announcement over a year ago, has pledged to be one of the most unique and versatile titles ever released. The announcement today ensures that the high profile title will receive the exclusive attention Sony has been craving.
"We are proud to announce that Little Big Planet, which will launch exclusively on the Playstation 3 platform, will have exclusive downloadable content which players will be able to purchase through the Playstation store,” said the company in a statement. “The new content will be made available on a regular basis exclusively to Playstation 3 owners. We believe this marks a significant opportunity for players to have the best gaming experience possible, and only on the PS3.”
Sony has come under a great deal of fire in this generation of hardware. From high costs to product shortages, the knives have been out almost from the beginning. One of the heaviest criticisms against the company though has been the loss of former exclusive titles. Games that made the Playstation 2 the best selling platform of all time—Grand Theft Auto, Devil May Cry, and recently Final Fantasy—have defected from the one time industry leader and spread out across multiple platforms. Whether this defection has been a cause or a symptom of the lagging sales of the most recent Sony offering is an issue for debate. What is not a debate though, is that in order to gain back some of the ground they have lost, the company needs hot and exclusive system sellers. With this recent announcement, it appears that they may have done just that.
“Having hit titles is of course essential to success and there is little doubt that even with some recent positive growth, Sony has struggled in this generation,” said Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. “The news that Sony has managed to snag exclusive content downloads for a title that they themselves have produced would ordinarily not be big news. But the way it’s been going for them so far, it has to be seen as a step in the right direction. With all the exclusives they’ve lost, it’s a good thing they can at least keep their own stuff on their own platform.”
The bulk of the former exclusives have appeared on rival Microsoft’s Xbox 360, with a few appearing on Nintendo’s Wii. Nintendo could not be reached for comment; representatives for Microsoft gave a terse, “We’ll see.”
‘Little Big Planet’ is set for release this October.
