SOTOMAYOR CONFIRMED; VOWS REVENGE ON THOSE WHO VOTED AGAINST HER
August 7 2009
Washington, D.C. – Carrying the weight of history and the hopes of an ever-growing segment of the American population Sonia Sotomayor has been confirmed as the 111th Supreme Court Justice. With a vote of 68-31 the Senate made simple work of posting the first Hispanic and the third women to the highest judicial position in the
United States. The confirmation is also a victory for President Obama whose luck has been less than stellar thus far into his Presidency and raises hope that the nascent leadership may be turning a corner.
Not everyone is so happy with the confirmation. Republicans and critics of the President are fuming at the confirmation but there is also one surprise amongst the dissatisfied and surprisingly it is Sotomayor herself. Though considered a relatively decisive victory in terms of the Supreme Court Sotomayor was apparently expecting a more definitive confirmation from the senate. Outwardly the newest addition to the highest court in the nation is putting on a brave face but insiders have indicated that she was expecting to score closer to 100 per cent in the final confirmation and is reportedly considering dropping the entire thing which is sending the Obama administration into overdrive.
“Sotomayor is an example of the kind of person driven to success. Anyone who achieves this level of office is obviously quite driven but when you have dual strikes
against you – being Hispanic and a woman – the drive to succeed is much stronger and much more pervasive. That brings with it a great deal of competiveness and a need to win definitively,” said an insider who preferred to remain anonymous. “She feels as though she has done everything they asked. She’s jumped through all the hoops they have set before her and done well and then they present her with this less than overwhelming win, at least in her eyes. That has the administration very
concerned that she will pull out which of course would be a huge black eye for them. They are working overtime to ensure that doesn’t happen.”
The Senate is currently sitting 60 Democrats and 40 Republicans meaning that Sotomayor wooed a handful of opposition senators, something considered no mean feat in the current politically charged climate in Washington. Nonetheless the Bronx-born judge isn’t happy with the results.
“She has been spouting off over all the people who didn’t vote for her. In her eyes it’s less of a vote along political party lines and more of a vote against her personally. She’s a very proud person and is taking those votes as criticism rather than what it is which is pure
politics. That could lead to some serious trouble down the line,” continued our insider. “She made it clear through the hearings that she was going to fall on the side
of the law but that may well have changed with this vote. I would be surprised to see the very kind partisanship that many who voted against her feared might occur, something that would not have happened if even a handful more of votes had gone her way. She has revenge very much on her mind.”
Revenge has never been explicitly excluded in the judicial process but is generally frowned upon especially amongst those in the Supreme Court.
“I hate to say this but she is Hispanic and there is a certain level of passion that Latinos have. They are an energetic people and sometimes that passion can express itself in unforeseen ways. That doesn’t mean that people shouldn’t make their decisions or live their lives but they need to be very aware of the Latin passion,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “Ultimately if this unravels it will fall on Obama and that would be disastrous. In his quest to aid in fighting the prejudices of the past he may have made his one fatal error that could forever doom the advance of minorities in the U.S. political system.”
Sotomayor is due to assume office on Saturday if she can be calmed down.
