Atlanta, GA – As the Presidential campaign enters its final weeks partisanship is undoubtedly on the rise. With polls riding a rollercoaster and the rhetoric between the two campaigns becoming more and more fierce, it appears that there is little the two sides are able to agree on, at least politically. With the final Presidential debate now finished there seems to be little that Republican and Democratic voters can agree upon, with one exception.
“There came this moment where I realized that I wasn’t even paying attention to what the candidates were saying and I was just watching those little lines go up and down,” said one uncommitted voter we spoke to. “They are like this little rollercoaster, I could almost see myself going up and down the loops, it’s just so neat. I didn’t even get a chance to think about who I was going to vote for.”
The people meter, which is designed to gauge the reactions of a select group of male and female viewers to comments made in the debate on a real time basis has become the newest celebrity in the campaign. The addition of the real time monitor has given CNN record ratings for the debates.
“Ticky, as we like to call it, has really been a mover for us. We knew it was a good idea but we didn’t realize how impactful it was going to be,” said a spokesperson for the network. “We have people calling and writing every day wanting to be a part of the focus group. We have people looking to get the meter for home use. It’s really amazing the impact those two little lines have had.”
CNN has reportedly been toying with the idea of using the meter on other programs such as ‘Larry King Live’ and ‘Inside Politics’ at least on a trial basis.
“We have to look at all the possibilities when it comes to the meter. It may be that we add it as a permanent feature to all of our broadcasts. With the ever increasing size of television screens it allows us the opportunity to cram more and more stuff on the screen and still allow people to see what is going on. Ticky isn’t going away anytime soon, I can tell you that.”
While CNN continues to use the meter, many are hoping that the technology can be advanced to the point where it will not only impact the viewing experience but also affect the content being presented, particularly when it comes to politics and breaking news.
“People seem to be looking for answers, and having a little meter on things allows people to not even have to work to make up their minds about things,” said Scrape TV Media analyst Sarah Piper. “Think of the applications; restaurants; clothing; love life; people won’t ever have to make a decision for themselves. Of course that may be reading too much into it. People may just get a kick out of those little lines unto themselves. Either way, it’s a funny thing to have become a talking point in what might be the most important Presidential campaign in history, but it is kinda cool.”
CNN also plans to expand the meter into ancillary streams as well such as t-shirts, lunch boxes, and possibly a television show.
“We’re throwing around ideas right now, just trying to figure out whether it would work best as an animated children’s show, or a primetime sitcom. We’re keeping all options open at this time,” said the spokesperson. “We are all ecstatic over Ticky’s success and we want to make sure we maximize our opportunites.”
