Washington, D.C. – While few would put much stock, literally or figuratively, into the ability of Fannie Mae executives to successfully negotiate the long term prospects of the economy, that hasn’t stopped them from trying. Still smarting from the economic meltdown, the now federally funded mortgage giant has issued an early warning notice to Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin allowing her the opportunity to re-up her house mortgage before the November 4th election.
“We have issued a number of early warning certificates to our mortgage holders. We will not comment on the particulars of any notice sent to any particular person in order to respect their privacy,” said a spokesperson for the company. “This is standard operating procedure and is not indicative of any particular person’s ability to pay back their mortgage, it is simply procedure.”
While that remains the official line, talk from within the company is a little different. Reportedly some executives are concerned about the outcome of the election and the aftermath of the campaign on the political career of Sarah Palin. While she will remain Governor of Alaska should the Republicans fail to win the election, some are concerned that her tumultuous time in the spotlight will ruin her chances for retaining that office once her term has expired.
“The whole collapse has made everyone in the business really skittish and no one wants to be in the position where they are having more and more defaults. These notices are sent out to give people an early warning so they can get their finances in order,” said an insider who preferred to remain anonymous. “I think sending the notice to Palin is just being practical and not a political comment. Hell, most of these execs are rich so they aren’t going to be voting for Obama anyway. They just need to cover their butts.”
Of course with the new national profile that Palin has been given by her run in the spotlight, it may not matter if she is re-elected. Opportunities for public speaking and gaining grants from wealthy donors are quite often a side effect of losing an election.
“Look at Al Gore. He lost the election and won a Nobel Prize. While it’s exceedingly unlikely that Palin will win the Nobel Prize, she will probably gain a fair amount of financial opportunities after the election should they lose,” said Scrape TV political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “Palin has hit the jackpot with this nomination and while her actual political career may or may not continue, there is little doubt that she will be around for a very long time. Sending out this notice has to be seen as little more than a paperwork issue and not a political one. Win or lose, Palin is set for life.”
We contacted representatives for Governor Palin and for the McCain campaign for comment but our calls were not returned.
We also contacted the Nobel committee for comment on the possibilities of Palin winning an award, the person we spoke to laughed and hung up the phone.
