Washington, D.C – With less than two weeks to go before the election and a little over two months before either Barack Obama or John McCain assumes control of the country, one could forgive George Bush if he is starting to get a little giddy.
With problem after problem there is little doubt that being President isn’t exactly what George Bush Jr. had in mind when he decided to throw his hat into the game. From 9/11, to the mire of Iraq and Afghanistan, to the looming financial catastrophe, to the lowest approval ratings for any President ever, one would not think ill of Bush is he was just counting down the days until he can retire to his Crawford Texas ranch and live the simple life again.
“Bush is an interesting case in the history of American politics. Most people who run for or become President have this driving need to run for office, whether to serve the people or their own ego. Bush seems to have neither need nor any kind of drive one way or the other,” said Scrape TV political analyst Gabriel Kinsey.“Some have argued that he only ran for the position to appease his father but the reality of most people is that their actions are not driven but deeper psychological desires, but rather as a product of who they are. With Bush it feels like he just didn’t have anything better to do for the last eight years or so and decided to be President of the United States. Once he got in it became a little more work than he expected and that’s caused him to kind of fade out of late, but at least he stuck it out to the end. You can argue about the quality of his work, but not his dedication.”
With the twin headaches of the failing war Iraq and the persistence of terrorism across the globe, and now the economic meltdown just as he was trying to slide out quietly, Bush is doing all he can to put on a brave face.
“Anyone who has left a job knows the feeling. You try to be professional but it’s hard to maintain any enthusiasm when you know you’re on your way out,” continued Kinsey. “Sure this is a little different than giving you two weeks but he has a definite end date. From everything he has said and done over the last few months you can just see he’s itching to get it done with and move back to the ranch. I don’t think you could say he’s done all he can for God and Country, but he’s given it the best shot a guy like him ever could. Being borne into wealth, privilege, and excellence doesn’t make you anything more than what you are. Some guys are just born lucky.”
While Bush hasn’t publicly announced any post presidential plans, the most likely scenario would have him lying low while either McCain or Obama settle in and try to sort through the issues besetting the country.
“Bush is not going to be the elder statesman kind of guy. He’s going to be around, obviously, but you aren’t going to be seeing him on speaking tours or be in an advisory position,” said presidential watcher Ben Gold. “What would he have to talk about anyway? It’s not the greatest run one could imagine. He’s already passed on a lot of duties, like running the Iraq war which has been done by National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley and General Petraeus for months. From what I’ve heard he and Mrs. Bush have been pre-packing some of their incidentals, making lists to ensure they get everything before they go, the typical leaving kind of stuff. I’d imagine with the way things are of late Bush would like to take a two month long nap and not have to deal with anything anymore. The little guy is just plum tuckered out.”
Officially Bush still has a little under three months in office, or a little less than 90 sleeps.
