Minneapolis-Saint Paul, MN – With the growing controversies over Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, The McCain campaign is coming under increasing scrutiny over their vetting process of the Alaskan Governor. McCain is hitting back hard, accusing the media of bias and reminding them that he is a veteran.
“Our vetting process was thorough and complete,” said McCain. “It’s irresponsible of the media to question our process. I believe this is only happening because Governor Palin is a woman. Keep in mind that I am a veteran, so I know vetting.”
An aide corrected the latter part of McCain’s statement afterwards, stating that McCain wasn’t referring to his Vietnam as a part of the search for a candidate, but simply to remind people that he fought for his country and is a true patriot.
Of course John McCain’s military experience has been a significant part of the campaign, especially as attacks against Barack Obama’s lack of international experience intensify. On the second night of the Republican National Convention a group of Vietnam veterans were introduced to raucous applause.
“The campaign has been using the veteran card very effectively,” said Scrape TV political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “It’s really well done, at least with the conservative base, considering how unpopular and unsuccessful a war it was. Of course that’s never held against the soldiers. The number of movies that have been made, even the recently released Tropic Thunder, based on the war help as well. It’s become a whole lot more popular than it was when it was actually being fought. They’ve done a fantastic job of convincing the voters to care about a veteran from a war they really don’t care about. Whether that will help them through the Palin controversies is a different issue altogether.”
The revelations about Sarah Palin of course are a more pressing issue than McCain’s service record with the process of her pick coming under greater scrutiny as more and more revelations come to light. Whether as a reaction, or genuine disinterest in the issues, the campaign has been vociferous in defending the choice.
“They have to defend the choice now, even if they didn’t vet her properly. The choice is made and they have to make the best of it,” continued Kinsey. “I guess you could see it as analogous to the Vietnam War in a lot of ways. They got themselves in deep and had to make the best of a bad situation. Of course, we all know how that ended up. Hopefully Sarah Palin won’t end in some Republican prison at the end of all this.”
