Washington, D.C. – With only days to go before Americans go to the polls to elect a new President, Sarah Palin has dropped a bombshell that could change not only the landscape of the next four years, but the state of American politics forever. She has endorsed rival Barack Obama for president.
While both members of the Republican ticket have revelled in their maverick labelling, this latest foray into the political unknown has struck both parties with a deep sense of shock and fear as to what the fallout might be.
“Palin in recent weeks has gone off course from the script she has been given but she has still more or less stayed within the general framework of the message. This is a complete left turn that will have massive repercussions,” said Scrape TV political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “This campaign has seen a number of defections such as Joe Lieberman and Colin Powell but to have someone actually on the ticket expressing support for the opposition. With only a few days left before the election for her to make this kind of declaration is nothing short of shocking.”
The first sign of Palin’s new left leaning tendencies was at a rally in Reno, Nevada where she was spotted wearing a scarf bearing the Democratic donkey logo (see video here). So far Republican Party officials have not commented on the unusual support.
“There has to be some question as to whether she actually meant republican support. Palin is best when she is working from a script and it may be that she was handed the wrong one or none at all and she was just trying to wing it,” continued Kinsey. “It’ll be interesting to see the spin on this one. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see something like an accusation of Democratic spying. No matter what happened it doesn’t reflect well on Palin. Either she is a less than analytical reader, a traitor, or a complete buffoon. One thing is clear, after this election is done, if she and McCain do end up losing, she likely won’t have much of a future in the party.”
Palin’s gaffes have already become the talk of this election since her rise to public attention at the Republican convention in September. From skeletons in the closet to failed interviews, Palin’s leap onto the national stage has been anything but smooth. This latest, whether another gaffe or a deliberate strategy, seems a bombshell one way or the other.
“Palin has something, there’s no doubt of that, but it’s more a force of personality rather than genuine depth if intelligence and experience,” said a Republican insider who preferred to remain anonymous. “She gets people riled up but there’s honestly nothing behind the bluster. Everyone behind the scenes know this but they are trying to put on the best face. Politics always ends up with either really smart and capable people, or airheads that give good face. Palin is okay at first blush, but she is harsh and her inadequacies have been aired and any good will she may have garnered by her hockey mom persona has been long lost. This latest thing is just the latest evidence that at the very least she was too much too soon. Way over her head.”
We also contacted the Obama campaign for comment on the endorsement. No one would officially comment on the situation, but our contact did say that “The Campaign appreciates support from all corners. We are happy that the McCain campaign has decided to put aside partisan politics and do what is best for America.”
It has also been reported that McCain campaign mascot Joe the Plumber is also contemplating supporting the Democratic ticket. Most watchers believe the endorsement will have little effect on the outcome.
“No one actually listens to what politicians say,” continued Kinsey. “They just wait to cheer their side.”
