Washington, D.C. – In an exclusive interview on ‘Meet the Press’ today, former Secretary of State Colin Powell gave his official endorsement to Barack Obama in his bid for Presidency. In the live interview the Republican General outlined his reasons and rationale for supporting the Democratic candidate (see the video here) and in doing so gave Obama the support of nearly every prominent person in the world.
From Ben Affleck to nearly every living Nobel Laureate, Barack Obama has been drawing support from a diverse group of people in the public eye. John McCain on the other hand has had support little support from well known celebrities.
“McCain has a few well known supporters like Bruce Willis and Chuck Norris but for the most part his supporters are well past their prime as far as prominence go. He’s also got very limited support from intellectuals and people with any level of respect like General Powell,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “That may be due in large part to Obama’s standing as a semi celebrity himself. Aside from the fact that most of Hollywood is very Liberal, celebrities like to attach themselves to a winner and they see Obama as that. Hollywood knows how to pick winners. There’s a reason that Ben Affleck is who he is and Chuck Norris is who he is. Box office directly relates to political affiliation.”
With the polls trending in Obama’s favour that bet seems to be paying off for those endorsers.
“Hollywood, like Politics, is all about who you know. Talent, drive, ambition, imagination, character, all those things are secondary to your affiliations,” said Scrape TV political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “Much has been made of Obama’s connection with William Ayers in the last little while but precious little has been made of his connection to Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio. Those connections are just as relevant if we do indeed end up with a President Obama. Things like will he sign bills that give funding to aging celebrities? We have to watch for those possible conflicts of interests whether the affiliation is with a celebrity or with a former domestic terrorist.”
And it isn’t only potential conflicts of interest that concern the two parties. Issues such as inauguration parties and fundraising galas are also foremost on the mind of strategists.
“Obama has Stevie Wonder; McCain has Jessica Simpson. Which inauguration is going to rock the best,” continued Kinsey. “The American people need to take these kinds of things into account when they step into the voting booth. Things such as foreign policy and healthcare are obviously important issues for everyone, but people need entertainment as well and the voting public needs to ask themselves these important questions. Steven Spielberg or Jamie Farr? Do they want another four years of the same celebrities or do they want a fresh crop. American voters have a tough decision ahead of them.”
The election takes place November 4th, just in time for the start of the Oscar season.
