DETROIT LIONS PLAN REBOUND AFTER DEVASTATING WIN
September 28 2009
Detroit, MI – It has been said that all good things must end. Childhood, love affairs, perfect meals, inevitably all great experiences pass into memory. Much like human beings themselves it is, perhaps, the knowledge that those great things are mortal
that makes them so tangible and great. As human beings it is our knowledge of our own mortality that helps define our lives and so too does it help to define our creations and our experiences.
That harsh reality is something that that has often been experienced in sport. With one spectacular high quickly collapsing into the lowest of lows, the ignominy of defeat is something that all athletes across the world have experienced more than once. It is in the face of those obstacles that great athletes, and men, become greater and lesser people collapse. Such is that case with the Detroit Lions who yesterday ended their 19-game winless streak with a victory over the Washington Redskins. The streak, one of the longest in history of the league, set records left and right, something the team and players will have to come to grips with over the coming weeks and months.
“It’s a tough thing. Tougher than you could ever really think before it happens but
you just have to soldier on and keep your head up. You can’t dwell too long on your failures because if you do they will start to become habit and that is the last thing anyone here wants. We have another game next week and we need to prepare for that and not spend time dwelling on the past,” said Lions head coach Jim Schwartz. “We have the Bears next week and they’ve been playing well. The major issue we see with them is that without Urlacher in the line-up they are a little soft down the middle. That will make them susceptible to the run which will allow us to establish a passing game and potentially make a few quick scores. We are going to learn from what happened on Sunday and move on from there.”
The Bears currently have a 2 and 1 record in what is considered the toughest division in the league.
“Minnesota, Green Bay, and Chicago aren’t teams that lose all that easily. Many people forget how many games the Vikings won in the in the 60’s and 70’s and even though
that hasn’t been the case in recent years they do have a winning history. With Favre at the helm it’s going to make it even more difficult to keep pace with the Lions,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “I don’t think people understand how difficult it is to keep streaks like that alive in the NFL. Being that consistent in any professional league is tough but it is particularly hard in the NFL which has the best parity in the league. Accomplishments like this were thought to be a thing of the past and perhaps, with this win, that is even more evident.”
The longest winless streak in the NFL still belongs to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers which lost a total of 26 straight games.
“The Buccaneers winless streak is still an incredible accomplishment but many people forget that they were an expansion team when that happened. Since that time they haven’t even come close to losing that many games in a season. The Lions though are one of the oldest teams in the league so for them this level of accomplishment is really impressive,” continued Marvins. “Traditionally age does not lend itself to record setting in this type of arena. Granted these are different players and coaches but because of the length of time in the league there is a certain formula that one follows and as a result generally gets the same results. Some teams break that tradition just as the Bucs did through the 1990’s but it is unusual.”
Though they are hesitant to reveal a game plan at this point it’s believed that Lions will attempt to miss many tackles and have the receivers not run out their routes.
