TIGER WOODS TAKES UNEXPECTED BREAK FROM GOLF
December 13 2009
Ponte Vedra Beach, FL – Tiger Woods has always been a big pull for everyone who has ever been involved with him. With hundreds of millions of dollars in marketing deals he has been a dream for companies that have managed to secure his attention.
No company, though, has more success from the rise of Tiger than the PGA. Before his arrival on the scene the league and the sport were generally dismissed as a game for grandparents, the butt of jokes, doomed to mainstream irrelevancy.
Woods changed all that, bringing the sport a newfound credibility and a popularity that few would have ever imagined for the sport whose previous spokesmen had been Quinquagenarians. Woods youth, his good lucks, and his clean cut charisma revolutionized the sport almost overnight. Much of the success of the sport was also dependent on Woods’ continued participation in the sport, something that only a few weeks ago seemed like a sure thing given his relative youth. Now though Woods has announced that he is taking an ‘indefinite’ leave from the sport that has made him and many others millions in order to spend more time with his young family, much to the surprise of everyone.
“After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from
professional golf, I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person. I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding,” said Woods on his website. “Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period. What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.”
It has also been reported that Woods has pulled out of a number of sponsorship deals of late, specifically with Gillette and Gatorade, in a move that is likely linked to his desire to live a more private existence.
“Tiger Woods has been the biggest brand in the history of golf, arguably in the history of sport, so it’s surprising to say the least that he is pulling out. He is still at the top of his game too, a game he has totally dominated for years but is now leaving behind. It’s very head scratching to be sure, leaving at his prime like this, and more than a little disappointing for the fans and the people who really rely on him to make a living,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “I don’t think one can underestimate the loss to the sport that his leaving represents. Alongside Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky, Woods is one of the most dominant athletes ever to play professional sports. Because of the scope of his influence though, and because of the sport he managed to accomplish it in, you’d have to make the argument that he is the greatest athlete ever.”
It’s believed that Woods’ decision is linked to his car accident a few weeks ago. He suffered minor injuries in the incident but the public fallout has been significant.
“It could be the embarrassment over the publicity, it could be that the injuries are more significant than we have been led to believe, or it could be just a coincidence. One can certainly understand a young man wanting to spend more time with his family. Whatever the reason it’s a huge loss for the sport and its fans,” continued Marvins. “When he pulled out of that charity tournament a couple weeks back we should have suspected that something was up but this is a little more than I think anyone could have guessed. Hopefully he’ll get back in the swing of things earlier rather than later.”
Reports indicate that Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren have just recently purchased a 2.2 million dollar estate in Sweden indicating that his hiatus has been long planned.
