Detroit, MI – With only three weeks left in the regular season, the Detroit Lions are still in the hunt for the perfect season. After Sunday’s loss to division rival Minnesota Vikings, a 20-16 squeaker, the path to the perfect season seems more and more clear. While the years is by no means done, the Lions are feeling more and more confident about their chances to do what only one other team has done before.
“It’s getting harder and harder because the longer this goes the more people you have gunning for you,” said Lions head coach Rod Marinelli. “We came close today but our guys were able to rally together and pull it through. We just need to keep things together and we feel we can make this happen. We have the talent, we have the coaching, and we have the drive. We do have this feeling like history is within our grasp.”
The Lions have a mixed schedule going forward with the only major threat to their quest for the 0-16 season is division rival Green Bay, currently sitting with a losing record.
“I have faith in our guys. They recognize the historical nature of this record and won’t allow anything to get in the way of achieving it,” continued Marinelli. “Green Bay is an old school rival but we won’t be dazzled by that. We fumble snaps, throw interceptions, and make lousy tackles against every team and we don’t expect it will be any different because it’s Green Bay.”
1976’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers remain to this day the only winless team in NFL history. Despite many valiant efforts no one has been able to match that record. In 1976 The Bucs were an expansion team in their first year. The Lions on the other hand are one of the oldest teams in the league, having been established in 1930. Both the coaches and the players feel the weight of that history upon them as well.
“There has been this level of jealousy from the older teams in the league that the perfect season record is held by a rookie team. The Lions this year have a chance to finally set that right for all the classic teams and win one for the veterans,” said Scrape TV sports analyst Mark Marvins. “It’s fitting that it may very be the Lions that get this record, there have been no other teams in the league that have so long flirted with the perfect season as Detroit has. They have had this largely winless team for decades, with the exception of the Barry Sanders years, and it’s great to see them finally achieve what they by rights should have achieved many years ago.”
The effect of the perfect season also hasn’t been lost on the people of Detroit who have been enjoying one of the worst economic crisis’ in history and the possibility of the big three automakers going bankrupt and continued to fill Ford Field week after week.
“The Lions and Detroit have been so inextricably linked for so many years and it’s great that the fans have stuck by them. Hopefully they will all see a resolution to their long hard wait,” continued Marvins. “It’s great to see a Cinderella story come together like this. It’s so rare in real life that you work hard and get exactly what you deserve. I guess that’s what sport is about, living out your fantasies on the field.”
Neither Lion’s management nor the city of Detroit would speak publicly about possible celebrations should the perfect season happen.
“We don’t want to jinx it. This has been a long time in coming,” said a spokesperson for the Mayor’s office. “The whole city is so proud of them. They are Detroit.”
The Lions are expected to lose heavily against the Indianapolis Colts next week who are fighting for their playoff lives.
